13yr. old male umbrella cockatoo,
we call him Amigo!

7yr. old Goffin cockatoo, she IS Sassy!!
Amigo flew in last evening, as usual around dinner time and is gimping on his right foot. I brought him into the house, to check him out thoroughly. His grip is very weak, he can move his toes, to grip,,but I could tell he's favoring it. He slept in his house cage last night, (not his hole in the tree), and it is still sore and a bit swollen, this morning. I'm going to give it a couple days till I head to the vets. Has anyone had their bird sprain a foot?

I imagine a bird could sprain their foot just like anything else. Especially with Amigo being soo... exposed to lots of different things. See how he is over the next few days but if it seems to get worse I'd bring him in to the vet and make sure he hasn't done anything serious to it. Might just have caught it at an odd angle when he landed perhaps :)

If there is swelling I would take him to the vet. Is he in an out side Avery? Then there is the poability of a bug bit of some kind.

I hope you have an avian vet check out your birds foot. If it was your foot you would go to the doc!!

I wouldn't leave it a couple of days! Take him now to get it checked out.. It could become infected after a couple of days :(

He's in good spirits and eating well. I'm keeping him caged, for now. If it were my foot, Spiritbird, I would give myself one more day to see if there was any improvement. If not, we're off to the doctors in the morn. Thank's guys!

Yeah , if it does take on a infection , you will need to jump on it quick .
I think it would be best you take him in ASAP , JMHO.
If he caught it on something , he could have punctured himself somehow trying to get away and gave it a good twist too. You never know , maybe something tried to grab him .
Just because we really don't know exactly what happened makes me think to take him to the doctor right away....if you actually saw him injure it in his cage , maybe waiting a day or two would be ok , but not knowing is what really worries me.. I would at least want him on a antibiotic if he did get in a tangle with another bird or animal.
Just my two cents here MareMiller .
I will keep you guys in our prayers. Please keep us updated ?
Amigo , you crazy guy , what did you do ? lol. I just love him :)

By the end of the afternoon, yesterday, Amigo was crawling all over his cage bars, using his right foot, also. I had him out and sitting with me a lot, having him step up, step down. I did an in depth, pulled every feather back to look for punctures, pressed every millimeter of his leg area, (looking for tenderness), noticed none, although he was loving every second of the attention! He has a slight puffiness around the ankle bone? The joint where the feathers meet the foot. He's using it a lot more comfortably than yesterday, he'll stretch it back under his wing, like normal, when stretching, and just plain old using it more.

I know you all probably think I'm being funk mama by not rushing him to the vet. If I felt that the leg was broken, cut in any way, in more pain than he appears to be in, I would be there in a heartbeat with him. The fact that the drive to his vet is an hour and half away, each way, would be more stress on him. I'm watching him closely, keeping him in the house and he's REALLY pissed off about it, Iknow he would rather be out and about patrolling his neighborhood. He's eating well and still maintaining his personality.

I seriously think he only twisted it. If it didn't look like he was improving, we would be on the road.

I would have done the same thing you did to be honest. If there is no open wound or puncture that I could see, and he was just favoring/limping, I would have given it a day or two to see if it was just a sprain.

Though I do own horses and am use to random injuries and having to make the "Vet or no vet" call.. those things are prone to getting into so much trouble. :(

He probably just twisted it as you said, or got it stuck in something and pinched. Who knows. I am glad he's doing better :)

Glad Amigo is doing better :). He is a wild man , lolol.
More pictures please !!!! I love seeing him , he is such a beauty :)

Glad to here he is doing better. Bet he thinks it great getting all the extra attention.

Amigo LOVES attention, especially when it involves him being touched in other places than his head and neck, he's an excitable boy! The more I checked him out,,the better he was feeling!! LOL!!

Sorry to hear about your birds injury. He really does need to see an avian vet ASAP, as he me may have broken it. If a parrot breaks a bone, fatal infection can set into the break extremely quick without antibiotic treatments, and the bone itself may heal wrong, permenantly disabling him. Better safe than sorry when it comes to injuries in parrots. Also, some vets may suggest you put the bird down. Don't listen to this nonsense, a broken bone can be healed in a parrot, it just takes a caring vet and caring owner.

Our double yellow head amazon broke her left foot about 10 years ago. Immediately after, she was limping/favoring it, didn't have an appetite, and was very lethargic. She was taken to the vet the next day, who x-rayed her foot and determined it was broken in several places. That vet recommended putting her down, and we did not find that acceptable. We called every other vet in town who treated exotics/avians until we finally found one willing to see if he could help her. He sedated her, set the foot as best possible, and casted it. He also prescribed a course of precautionary antibiotics to be sure the injury would not become infected. She hated the collar (TO KEEP HER FROM CHEWING IT), so we removed it and sprayed the cast with bitter apple, and gave her extra toys for distraction until the cast came off. It took about 6 weeks to heal, and the cast to be removed. You can see that the foot isn't quite right, but function wise, she is still able to grip her perch, land, hold food/toys, walk ect... on the foot perfectly fine. :greenyellow:

Today, Amigo is 99.9 percent back to normal. Thanks, kiwi bird, for the info but Amigo is going to be ok. I was very concerned when he flew in limping. If he was showing signs of lethargy or appetite loss, we would have been at the vet's office, immediately!

I'm glad to hear that your Amazon was saved, (by you), and is doing well!

Hi Molcan2! I was thinking about you the other day and was wondering how your newest addition, Rocco, was doing? Are he and Rome getting to know each other?

Yeah, I've been busy. Hes been great! I need to post an update with pics. He really is a fabulous bird. I got offered a U2 but turned it down, Tommy was like if it was an eclectus that would be different. He fits in so well that it feels like hes always been here. :D Hows sassy doing?

Sassy is awesomely feisty! Loves, loves, loves! My husband Tim. I'm all good with that! She and Amigo now tolerate each other in the same room. I would never leave them alone in the same room together,,,but, seeing some progress :)

Awww, thats good. After dealing with Amigo he deserves to have a bird adore him :D
