Hi guys,

Recently I've been seriously considering getting another bird and was looking into Senegals and Meyers in particular. Then, super luckily, I found someone locally who breeds Meyers. I know price is one of the least important aspects of adopting a new bird family member, but I just wanted to pop in here and ask if everything feels that $450 is a fair price for a hand-fed baby Meyers (unsexed)? Overall I'm quite sold on the species and the available babies are tempting me, but I also don't want to rush into something too soon. Thanks for any advice or insights.

Sounds about what I've heard. Not a red flag for me :)

over here that would translate to about £400 which sounds roughly right

Possibly slightly leaning towards the higher end of the price scale but for hand-fed that makes sense

If you're in the US, then the price of hand-raised, baby parrots varies greatly from state to state, or rather from region to region...I live in Pennsylvania, and the prices from breeders in the northeast US are double what they are down south, from North Carolina down, and especially in Florida. Same in southern California, the prices are half of what they are here. The reason is because there is a literally a fraction of the number of parrot breeders in the northeast as there are in the south and southwest US.

Case in-point, I got my Senegal as a 13 week-old, hand-raised baby, and I drove from central PA to Raleigh, NC to get him...Why? Well, for one, i liked the breeder a lot, I found him online and we talked for a couple of weeks, he sent tons of photos, answered all of my questions, called me back immediately every time, etc. And he and his wife have been breeding for decades, since the 1970's. The other reason was easily the price. I knew I wanted a Senegal, and I found one breeder with a clutch in Pittsburgh who wanted $650 a baby, another on Long Island who wanted $600, and a bird-shop in New Jersey who wanted $600, and that was pretty much it. I drove to Raleigh and back (9 hours one-way, but no big deal, just a weekend trip) and I paid $400 for Kane, who is a wonderful bird, I couldn't ask for a better Senegal.

In general, I'd say that a Meyers or a Senegal hand-raised baby should cost between $400-$500, so the price you found sounds very fair.

Meyers and senegal:
Baby: 200 Euro
Adult couple: 450 Euro

then we have this law: no stealing the babies from underneath the parents
(though esp with the smallers species people still cheat/ are unaware)
So in theorie you get the ones that can actually feed themselves.
And yes- they are tame, most people have a couple as pets who happen to breed... so the babies do get handled/ socialized

Why not check rescues? I know there are alot of unwanted birds out there. Not being mean just a thought.

Actually, I've seen quite a few Meyer's on Craiglist being re-homed in the last few months, well both Meyer's and Senegals. Definitely something to look into...

I got my Meyers for that price as a handfed baby, Very reasonable and worth it!

We paid about $750 here in San Diego for our Ruppel Meyers parrot.

Damn...I would have thought they would be cheaper in San Diego since there are literally thousands of parrot-breeders throughout CA...$750 for a Ruppels Meyers is actually what you'd pay here in northeast US, from Ohio over to New Jersey, up through the New England states, and down through Maryland and DE...Once you get into Virginia then you start seeing the prices of hand-fed baby parrots from both bird/pet shops and private-breeders. And the further south or southwest you go, the cheaper they get, with Georgia, Florida, and Texas being the cheapest states to buy a parrot in by-far...But I have a close friend from high-school who moved to Los Angeles about 15 years ago, and another who moved to San Diego right out of high-school (1997, he's a year older than me), and both of them have birds and have sent me videos and photos from multiple bird-shops out there (that's the other thing, there are very, very few bird-shops in this area, even in New York, New Jersey, etc., there are only a handful)...The one in Los Angeles bought a hand-raised baby Blue and Gold Macaw from a private breeder in Orange County, CA (Fullerton I believe), and he paid only $1,200 for him! And that included him being able to drive to the breeder's home each weekend to spend a few hours with his baby and to hand-feed him...A hand-fed baby Blue and Gold Macaw from a private breeder here costs between $2,000-$2,500! It's ridiculous. If I ever decide to bring a larger parrot into my family, I'm either going to adopt/rescue it or if I get another hand-raised baby from a breeder I'll be traveling south for it for sure, I'll save on-average between $500-$1,000!

Mine was $650 in San Diego at a local pet store. I bartered with them and finally got them down to $450, which is actually the average price for Meyers in my area.

I absolutely adore my little Meyers parrot. Very cuddly, not loud, full of personality, busy and simply sweet!

I know this is an old one, but I have been looking at meyers recently and they now run $1500 around here (Delaware Valley) i can't believe they tripled in price in only 2 years. Craziness.

That's the going price across the board in your area??? That's obscene!
Have looked on birdbreeders.com?

Yeah. This is the price at the 3 bird stores that are withing a 2hr drive of me. Going to be keeping a eye out this spring for a breeder to buy direct vs through a store.

Birdbreeders actually has one for 1500 from birds by joe that is one of the stores near me.
