So, I took Meiko to the vet for just a routine check up and blood work, and they said they vaccinate for Polaris I think is what he called it. Has anyone heard of this? He said most species can get it, but caiques can die from it!!!! Needless to say, I got the vaccine. Otherwise, they said Meiko was a very friendly bird and looked healthy. The bloodwork should be back by Monday. :)

congrats! glad everything seems okay :) its almost time for me to get cooper into the vet. it will be the first time IM taking him. the store i got him from gets every bird checked before they go home with their owners.

That's good!! I got Meiko from a breeder, so she just said to get him checked when he got home. She has really healthy birds. :)

its always good when breeders can raise nice healthy little babies. like i said, glad it all went well :)

How about polyoma virus vaccine.....many vets recommend it for young birds.....be sure to ask your vet about booster shots.....I think that is the current thinking to keep birds up to date on the vaccine.....

Caiques are pretty healthy birds. This is a known susceptibility, though. I'm glad you got the vaccination. Make sure to get a booster shot every year. :D

Glad all went well--and it's always heartening to hear about good, responsible reputable breeders too.

PS At Eliza's first vet visit, the doc took her for bloodwork, came back with her and said "Um...she has an opinion about everything, doesn't she?" :D

Maybe it was that.. It was pol-something. I just looked and it was polyoma. Whoops. He said young birds should get it, but caiques can die from it as adults.

That is too funny!! My vet came back and said, "He is a control-freak and has to know what is going on at all times." Haha

My guy weighs between 160-170 grams. They should weigh between 150-180 grams to be healthy, depending on if its a black capped or white bellied.

Oh, and his hatch date is March 15, 2013. So he's about 5 months old. He'll stay the same weight probably his whole life.

Glad his visit went well! :D

I've never had any of my birds vaccinated, but then again, most of my birds have been adults... and if any were vaccinated, I am unaware of it as I don't know what was done in their past.

I thought this was a very interesting article on vaccination, though!
