We have a new addition to our flock! Say hello to Rue (pronounced Roo), a (roughly) 6 year old female pearl cockatiel. :40:
I was originally planning on getting another cockatiel when I turned 30 in March of 2019, but last week, husband's coworker saw from his social media that we have cockatiels and asked if we would be interested in adopting his bird, who is rarely let out of her cage and hasn't been played with for some time. She used to have another cockatiel buddy but it passed away 2-3 years ago so she has been alone ever since.
After seeing a picture of her, we decided to adopt her!! They weren't sure about her gender but I am now positive she is female based on her age and markings. I have wanted a female for a long time -- my 7 year old male cockatiel lost his mate earlier this year so they are sort of in the same situation, both have lost a companion.
So yesterday we traveled to coworker's house and she was in a sad, small cage that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in months(maybe years?), her diet was cheap Walmart bird seed, and it looked like she hasn't had a bath in ages. So the name I picked for her sort of fits -- Rue is a character from the Hunger Games (book/film) who lived in really bad conditions in her district until she was picked to be a tribute for the games.
So far Ember doesn't seem that interested but Boo is very receptive to her. He is spending all of his time at the far right corner of his cage where her cage is next to his side. In time, I hope they become a pair and can make each other happy.
