Meet Kevin

We picked up our new Congo African Grey today. He's the sweetest little guy. Named ofter the bird from Up, he's our giant bird friend.

He's four months old and just finishing up his weaning. I love him to pieces already.

Greys are the best of the best. You are truly blessed to have one in your life. Please read up on all of their needs if you have not. I actually made myself a binder with lots of articles and have a collection of books. You can never learn enough. Start him out on a good pelleted diet with all the veggies and fruits, nuts, grains. They are not too cuddly but love the head scratch.

I've been reading everything I can get my hands on. Right now he's getting fruits, veggies, nuts and grains. He's still getting the baby bird mush but only because he wants it still. He's old enough to give it up and isn't interested in it much. As long as he wants it, I'll give it, per the request of the lady who raised him.

He really is a wonderful bird, we're lucky to have him.

Question for the African grey people. Delicious subject, I know.

Kevin's poop is fairly watery. Not like a diarrhea, the actual feces is fully formed, there's some white in it, but it's surrounded by a decent amount of liquid. I assume this is because he still gets the bird mush so he's getting a lot more water in his diet but I'd like a second opinion.

Another thing I noticed this morning when he stretched his wings out is that his feathers are kind of scruffy looking under the wing right where the wing meets the breast I guess. Is this normal for young birds? I don't see him picking at feathers there, they just look white, fluffy and somewhat disheveled.

Trying to get second opinions before I run back and drag him to the vet.

Congrats on Kevin! I love his name! I have a baby cag Dorothy, she is 15 weeks tomorrow. Her poop is like Kevins, she is still on formula so I assume that is why there is alot of liquid. Some days are hard to get her formula into her (she is very busy these days, flapping, exploring!) Those days there is less liquid in her poop. Babys mess up their feathers alot by flapping around in their cage. I know that Dorothy crawls around, flaps and sometimes falls in her cage. Feathers get messed up!
