Nic Nic..."World's Quietest" Eleonora Cockatoo
So, let me say to begin with, I adopted my Nic Nic from a reputable Parrot rescue.
When I adopted him I paid a nominal "Adoption Fee"...I was certainly okay with this. The Rescue has over 100 birds and does amazing things for birds which have no where at all to go...many COMPLETELY unadoptable, and yet they have a forever home and fantastic care. Taking in and caring for troubled and needy birds is expensive and I was and would be happy to help.

I felt STRONGLY that paying a fee to help keep this Rescue open and running was not only acceptable, but I would have made a donation even if there was no fee.

YET...when I see people looking for "A Great, Caring, Loving Home" for their own birds which they need to find a home for, I am appalled by the "REHOMING FEES"...especially since many of these are nearly as much as buying a bird from a breeder.

If you really loved your bird and truly cared for it's future home the LAST thing you should be concerned with is making a buck in the process.

If I found myself in the position of needing to find a family for Nic Nic, I certainly would put his well being above turning a buck.

Am I the only one who thinks this???

Just had to get that off my chest.:white1:

I agree with you 100% !!!!!

While I would personally try to send my birds to a rescue and would be willing to pay a one-time "abandonment" fee (or whatever they might call it), I don't think the rehoming fee asked for by individuals is necessarily out of line. I imagine it would help weed out people who aren't serious about owning a parrot. Sure, there are people just trying to recoup some/all of their loss, but even in that case they might inadvertently boost their birds' shot at landing in a good home.

I think that rehoming fees are okay, as long as they aren't astronomically out of this world. And some people ask for a lot more than they should. And then there are others who, when they realize that the bird is going to a home where it will be taken care of and it will be safe, sometimes the seller lowers the rehoming fee.

In June, I had just lost my Amazon, and I wasn't really looking to adopt. I was looking at other species to learn more about them and then decide what I wanted to adopt later down the road.

I decided I would look at Craigslist. In my area, I can find a wide variety of birds that are listed who need new homes. I was looking at one ad, they had a Senegal parrot. I had never heard of a Senegal, so I was curious about this little bird. I did a little research online, and then emailed this person about their bird.

I had told this lady I wasn't looking to adopt, and had told her my story. I had 18 years of experience with birds, (more if I include the fact I had finches when I was a young child). She felt comfortable with me and we continued to communicate about Max. She had told me that she had been in my situation, losing a bird last year. She felt that Max would be best suited with me and that she would lower the rehoming fee to what she paid so I could get Max when I was ready.

There are some people who are decent and who do look out for the birds' best interests first. :)

It depends on the reason behind the "fee". If it is an attempt to recoup the cost of the bird then I would reason that the bird is unwanted and the owner sees the initial purchase of the bird as a mistake. If it is a lower amount then I would see it as an attempt to ensure that the person the bird is going to is willing to put forth their own resources for the well being of the bird.

I think there are many reasons for a Parrot to be re-homed or sold. I for one don't think it's wrong to recoup some funds. There has been a lot of expense for cage, toys & so on. In Australia there are a few people that take on free birds only to sell them at the earlist opportunity. So if i were to want to rehome I would sell for a price fitting for the circumstances.

I have in the past given away birds that have been kind of small or not what i consider quality & have found out that the bird was sold on for the top $'s for that species. Now days if i were to have such a bird i would sell it for a reduced price.

However if I find a parrot that someone else gives me & i don't want to keep it, I do rehome these birds free of charge to friends & rellies.

When you deal with the public selling companion parrots like i do you meet some very undesirable characters. Lucky the majority of people are like you guys on this forum.

Well, said Pedro. Good to hear an Aussie view on re-homing. I am yet to see any 're-homing' adverts, only 'for 'sale'. Are you from Vic? (I am) I have been told that the RSPCA in Vic do not re-home any surrendered birds. Is this correct? Do you know why? I searched them when looking for my new bird and nothing. Many dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs (lotsa rabbits and guinea pigs) What birds to do keep/breed?
