Hey everyone. I've been kind of busy lately, but anyways... Okay, so I'm going to be converting a room in my basement into a free-flight space for my budgies. I'm going to be using Marmoleum for the floors, stainless steel mesh and cross beams, a few infrared heat panels for parrots, zero-VOC paint that is super-safe and made from soy resin and plants and minerals...you get the point.

Anyways, I also want to have some foraging stations for them, but there's basically no foraging toys in existence for budgies. I've been thinking of getting them a Mastermind Heart, but I'm not sure if it's too big. They have a number of toys and perches that are intended for medium to large parrots, and they love them. My budgies are very smart, can easily manipulate objects, and are very strong. My 14 year old, Samantha, has been trying to push decent sized books out of my bookshelf, and I keep having to take CD cases away from her because she's been almost pushing them off the shelves. One of the kids that I adopted in August from the Toronto Humane Society, Rumi, keeps trying to unscrew things.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could maybe post a picture of a budgie next to a Mastermind Heart forager so I can determine whether or not they could use it? I know you guys are probably going to tell me that budgies aren't able to use it, but I need to see for myself. Thanks :).

Your basement aviary sounds awesome!

I've never seen a Mastermind Heart in person, but found the dimensions are 7x8x3 inches, so it's a bit bigger than a budgie is, but maybe that won't matter. You could also maybe make something that performs the same tasks with dried bamboo or coconut shell?

In any case, such lucky little guys and gals, I bet they will be so happy with the new digs :)

Baxter has the Foraging Circle which is just about the same size as the heart. It is a good size for him and he is able to move the cones around easily. But, he is much bigger than a Budgie. I've never seen a Budgie use the Circle or the Heart, but I don't think a budgie-sized bird would be able to move the cones.

Here is a video of an Eclectus using the Heart. Maybe this will help you decide?

Don't need to buy foraging toys to make foraging stations for little birds! :)

It could be something simple such as putting treats inside mini cupcake holders or stuffing an egg carton with shredded paper, beads and treats!
