As Martini sits on my shoulder eating a yellow pepper, I discovered today that she had some recall training.

I can't get over how she knows this at her age.

if we put a hand up to fly to us, it takes her a few seconds to process what we want her to do, then she flies to us....she's done it for most of the day on and off.

At first I thought it was a fluke, but the more we asked her to come, the more she came:eek:....I'm just blown by this.

tonight for the first time she was giving me kisses, and lots of them, it truly melted my heart.

Now I have a pile of smushed up peppers on my shoulder while she happily munches away on them, I love you Martini, you are adorable.

I have to admit, when I brought her home yesterday I was wondering if I had made the right decision, due to her hard beaking. I know how stubborn a sennie can be.

since we've been working with her, rubbing her beak etc....she has transformed into a non beaking bird sort of speak.

Today she is totally different, she's been gentle, and has been a cuddle bug. her favourite spot is on your shoulder, she just chills when she is there.
she fell asleep on Tylers shoulder today while he was playing a video game.

I'm just bumping this up....
curious to know if anybody had a very young bird that knew recall?

NNNNAAW, Beth! Martini truly was meant to be! I know she's filling a HUGE void in your heart, and I think she senses that she is a very special girl. :)

I think recall is just one of those things some birds "get" inherently and others must be taught or may even never learn. 2 of my parents birds can be called and are pretty good about coming when you ask. Lucy was a wild caught adult, but she supposedly picked it up real quick, so I think hers probably came from being called by her flock in nature (and she picked up "get over here" as her human flocks way of calling). Alfie the goffin supposedly learned around the time he was weaning when my parents were teaching him to fly, probably because they had no idea what they were doing, he's a smart bird and it was an "unintentional" kind of thing. Their other bird they also weaned and taught to fly comes for no one.

oh that is so cool how fun!!!! How old is she? I have a Lorikeet that is 2 years and recalls near perfectly.

I think your right Kiwibird...soem birds just get it.

it seemed really strange for Martini to know this at such a young age....she doesn't know her name, but if you hold up your hand, she comes....gosh it's amazing what they can learn at such a young age.

she's just nicely weened at 3 months. I got her on Thursday.:D

I had a 'tiel and a Jenday that both knew recall even though I'd never tried to teach it to them. I was young and didn't do much with trick training, but they both picked up pretty quickly that if I had my hand up then that was the sign for "Come here!!!" Hehe. It's definitely an awesome feeling, isn't it?? Congrats again on your lovely baby. I'm so thrilled for you :)

She sounds like a smart girl:). Will you be training her to free fly eventually?

maybe....I was thinking yesterday it's never too soon to start harness training.

It couldn't hurt. Going outdoors without being in a cage is something I think most birds really love. If we ever adopted a second bird who was a flyer, I would probably work on recall and harness training so we could progress to free flight. Kiwi can't fly, but he can just run outside freely and you see the "wild' come out a bit. It's where a bird truly belongs after all. And I bet with as young as she is, a harness would be no problem to get her used to.
