March's theme was
"What's in a Name?"

Thank you for all the wonderful pictures and stories this month! It has been such a pleasure learning how your bird's got their names. All of them show such imagination, and fit them perfectly!

The poll is now open, and the winner will be announced when the poll closes on the morning of April 1st.
Please remember to vote for your favourite! (You can vote for your own entry!)

chris-md & Parker

"Parker’s name when he came to me was Porker.
While he was well loved in his prior home, he definitely got rescued from that name.
We named him Parker as a name similar to his own, since he was often saying his old name."

Rozalka & Zenek

"Me with my familly visited a zoo where I saw hanging parrots for the first time. They were the most adorable to my mum.
There also was a poster with bats - two of them were upside down and one in (un)normal position. One of these hanging was saying "Zenek passed out!". After this trip my mum started calling all hanging parrots "Zeneks". She also wanted them to home but they are rarely met in aviculture.
A year later we got a conure. The first day he was walking in his Cage upside down and mum said "Zenek, Zenek!" ...and later we gave him this name."

texsize, Luna & Merlin

"So I think the picture and the name says it all. Twins.
After getting Luna (Bird on right) and seeing how much interest she had watching youtube video of her species I knew I had to get a second.
Did not think of the problems two nearly identical birds would create."

LaManuka & Sludge

"This is Sludge, our previous purple crown, pictured circa 1998.
We originally named him "Roger" but weren't really happy with that.
One night while watching a major football match with commentary provided by a well known Australian comedy duo,
we heard them use the nickname "Sludge" for one of the players.
As everyone here knows, lorikeets are infamous for what is produced from their rear ends, so the name was deemed appropriate, and way more fun."

Laurasea & Penny

"Penny, because when I saw her stuffed in a tiny travel cage only inches larger than her body , and in which she couldn't stand up in because it was so small. She was covered head to toe in her own poop, with piles of poop in her cage, with her water covered in a film of algae. She was screaming, self mutilating, plucking, trying to bite.
I thought to myself , in for a Penny in for a pound.
I thought she would be vicious, and take a lot of work. But she is a very sweet and funny bird, has the biggest sense of humor of any of my birds.
She did take some work, mostly to engage her in life, to learn to fly, she still gets scared and lunges if I move quickly, but she pushes my hand away instead of bites now. I love her so much.
I found get on a shelf in dark corner of a mom and pop store who was letting an employee re-home her.
I wasn't looking for another bird, but I had to save her! I had to borrow money from two people to buy her. So worth it! "

ParrotLover2001 & North

"This is my budgie, North.
She came to me the name Norm (previous owner though she was male)
I wanted to attend Green Mountain college, one of the dorm halls I could have stayed in was North Hall.
Since the college closed and I was devastated, I decided to name her after one of the buildings.
Out of all the names, North fit her most. Yep, she was named after dorm hall."

tfw & Kass

"We are huge Legend of Zelda fans in our house (we even named one of our kids after another Zelda character). So we named Kass after a character from Zelda Breath of the Wild.
The character, Kass, is (surprise surprise) also a Blue and Gold Macaw! Ok officially his species in the game are called "Rito" but he's awfully B&G Macaw-like
Kass in BOTW is a wandering minstrel who sings along with his accordion and is actually quite helpful in the quest.
Side note: Just found out a few weeks ago Kass is actually a girl, but the name still works LOL"

Gabz & Tico Papagayo

"This is my Tico Papagayo. He is the only one of all our birds we chose the name for.
When i was told I was getting him, as the best Christmas present I have ever received, we inevitably got chatting about names. As a life long Bon Jovi fan, i suggested Jovi as thought it was a cool name, by other half vetoed that name, saying no way. Lol. As a sneaky attempt to honour the band in some way, I suggested Tico, after Tico Torres the Bon Jovi drummer. The name stuck.
The Papagayo of his name, comes from my toddler memories. I have wanted a parrot since the second i saw them on a family holiday when i was 2 years old, and there were parrots in our hotel. I was a very chatty child, hard to imagine i'm sure, so was speaking with the people in the hotel who had the parrots, they taught me that they were Papagayos (a spanish word for parrot) and from that day, parrots were forever papagayos in my mind.
As such, Tico became Tico Papagayo."

wfstecko & Rocco

"Here's Rocco, my U2. When I first got him I thought he was female and named him Roxy. A couple of months later I had a blood test done and found he's a male, hence the name change."

Alwese & Doogie

"My first bird is "Doogie". He was first owned by my family doctor. Doogie is now 24 years old and I got him when he was 5. Back then, there was a TV show called Doogie Howser. This was a doctor's name for a doctor's bird. I affectionatly call him Doog Monster. He is very strong and very smart"

bill_e & Nike

"Her/his name is Nike. I'm pretty sure she is a boy but my previous bird of 39 years who was likely also a boy was named Berta and was referred to as a girl. When I picked up Nike I decided the easiest thing for my brain was to continue to call my new bird a "her", so my girl Nike didn't get a new name upon the re-home but was now identified as a female....how contemporary is that?

Nike's nickname is Berta just because I cant get 39 years of calling that name out of my brain. I did consider changing her name but she uses it in a few of her learned phrases so I decided to keep it."

SailBoat & Julio

"Julio came to us with his name and his big Amazon rooster attitude and hasn't changed one bit...
As a well adjusted adult Amazon he has earned the right to be fully walk-about and fully flighted 24/7... Not something that I recommend for everyone, but like I said, he has earned it fully."

Cycletim & Jasper

"This is Jasper 18 year old boy CAG . He's new to us we re homed him from a loving home in which his owners passed away/relocated. He loves hard plastic caps and shredding paper and little boxes."

Snapdragon & Tashi

"Meet Tashi. He's a juvenile mustache parakeet. Mustache parakeets natively range from China down through Indonesia. I am incredibly fortunate to have been chosen by this wonderful little parrot.

It took a while to find the right name. I was paging through a list of gryphon characters in a book by one of my favorite authors when a name jumped out at me. Tashiketh.

Hmmm. "Tashiketh."

Great name, but perhaps a bit long for a little guy. What about shortening it to "Tashi"? That felt right.

Then I remembered that one of my favorite lamas at a Tibetan Buddhist temple I used to attend was named Tashi. I looked up the meaning of the name. When I discovered that it meant "good fortune" or "auspiciousness", I KNEW that this was my boy's name.

Out of curiosity, I researched the native range of mustache parakeets, specifically looking at the areas they inhabit within China. To my delight, I discovered that mustache parakeets' native range does include parts of Tibet that are below 3300 feet.

I never intended to get a parrot. But it's my good fortune that my Tashi chose me.

AmyMyBlueFront & Amy

"I must admit that I'm bad at naming pets lol..even with Smokey (TAG) my then-wife's best friend named her When Amy came home with me my mom and I racked our brains..Bubbles..Birdy..couldn't decide.
Then I thought "she" is an Amazon..so I named her (now we all know she is a he) Amy...short for AMYzon. A couple days after he came home the breeder I got him from called to ask how he was doing and if I named her and when I said yes it's Amy...he was like.."Huh??..ummm...ok!"

Betrisher & Rosetta

"I've never entered a POTM before, but my dear daughter was recently lucky enough to snap some pics of Rosetta wearing her favourite accessories. So here's our story.

It took quite a bit of sweet-talking to get my husband to be OK with adopting 'Setta. He was still grieving the loss of our sweet Dominic and didn't believe another bird should come into our family so quickly. The kids, however, were longing for the awful hole to be filled and so hubby finally said 'Oh well. Do what you have to. I won't stop you.'

In those circumstances, we all felt we should tread sensitively around Hunn (that's what I call my hubby and what he calls me), so when it came to naming the new bird, we asked what name he favoured. Well, blow me down if he didn't want 'Snowy' or 'Cocky' or 'Sally'!

Really? Yep! So, the kids and I had a Big Think and remembered how bad-tempered he'd been when we first got our dog. On that occasion, we allowed him to name her 'Alice' after Alice Cooper, his favourite singer. Hmmm... we began to toss around names from among Alice's songs and my daughter came up with 'Nurse Rosetta'.

I had an 'Aha!' moment, because being that I'm a classics student, it would be very suitable to call my bird (and she *is* mine, despite the whole family loving her) Miss Rosetta Stone. So she's 'Nurse Rosetta' to Hunn and Rosetta Stone to me and the kids.

Either way, she's the funniest, most active, most adorable creature! The Beaks look at her with Judgement in their eyes when she yahoos about her cage like a pork chop. They're a lot more sedate and laid-back - I wouldn't have them any other way. I love all my birds!"

wrench13 & Salty

"When we first got Salty, each family member was allowed to pick one name and write it down on a piece of paper, and then I draw the winning piece from a hat. I chose Salty as my entry.
With other names like Pretty Boy, Dr. Megalopolis and Sasquash, I already knew I was going to cheat.
I think Salty is a proper name for a pirate parrot, no?"

wrench13-albums-salty-pics-picture18168-al-salty.jpg

Inger & Bumble

"Way back when Bumble was still “future bird,” I was chatting with a parrotlet breeder while on her waiting list. I did something about how tiny they must be when they hatch, and she said, “they’re about the size of a bumblebee.” I immediately responded “I WANT A BUMBLE-BIRD” and then realized that whoever future bird turned out to be, their name was Bumble.

And we lived happily ever after. Here she is in her silly sleeping pose. She honestly sleeps this way every night!"
