Manchester ring necks

Ok, don't think I've ever posted in this sub forum but wanted to share this photo of a couple of Manchester's very healthy feral ring neck population. We have an estimated 100 or so birds within a territory of about five miles, with a few different roost spots, and they get spotted further afield more and more regulary so they seem to be expanding. The bird feeders are in the car park of a local water park and nature reserve where I often take my camera, and I've seen a lot of ring necks there this year - in fact, if they're in the area you hear them long before you see them!

I Love seeing wild birds. We have a wild population here in Hawaii also. Unfortunately this is also the reason ringnecks are starting to be banned in some places. I think they're stunning.

Generally they seem to be fairly well received in the UK - we've done a pretty comprehensive job of wiping out our domestic bird population over the last few hundred years, so for most bird lovers a new arrival is warmly welcomed, particularly when they're as full of character as these fellas are. You do hear the odd rumbling of dissent relating to the species in the south UK where they occasionally come into contact with farmers and you hear rumours of culling them but they have loyal supporters fighting their corner. In the northwest they're only really colonising residential areas so there isn't a problem anyway.
