Man-hating female?

Yellow-naped Amazon (24 y/o)
Hey there,
I adopted my 24 year-old Yellow-Naped, Micah, 3 years ago from a man whose mother had passed away. There have been two instances when I have had Micah out of her cage, a boyfriend at the time approached me from behind without my knowing, and Micah viciously attacked me. She continued attacking until the boyfriend left the room.

The previous boyfriend was a jerk; however, Micah was not around him more than a handful of times. My mom has the idea that Micah was "warning" me about the boyfriend by attacking me. I ended up with several bites, including a huge welt on my neck where she bit and didn't let go for a period of time. Do you think the "warning" hypothesis is possible?

Some background:
Micah had been purchased as a chick by the man (son) for a female owner. My understanding is that the female owner lived with her son (and his wife) until she passed away. Micah yells the son's name, but she also yells things like "No, no, no!" When I adopted Micah, she was in a neglected state (poor diet, no toys, put in a room by herself). The man I adopted her from didn't seem to have much tolerance for her and just wanted her gone.

Micah has been DNA sexed and is female. I'm her primary caretaker. She vocalizes to me in the mornings/evenings when I get home. When a man comes into the house, she also becomes very vocal and excited; however, her pupils dilate, she watches the man intently at all times, and she will lunge if a man gets within 8" of her cage. I no longer let her out of the cage when men are around.

MY assumption is that she either dislikes men entirely or was abused by a man. Is this man-hating common with female Amazons whose primary caretakers/preferred person is also female?

I can only answer your question by my own experience with my YC Zon who is also Female! She also hates all Men! I have had her from a Baby, and she has been around both Men and Women, but she decide from around 3 Months of age, that she was not going to tolerate Men at all :(

Not that I know much about Amazons but it sounds to me like the bird was traumatized by events involving the son and his wife. Why else would Micah scream his name if not led by example in addition to fearing all men. Just my 2 cents.

BTW, welcome to the forum! :)

Thanks for the feedback and the welcome! The way she screams the son's name doesn't sound too alarming, but the "No, no, no!" definitely gives me the chills.

I didn't realize females might bond to other human females and hate men.

Alot of people say that it is a myth that Females do not like Men, but I am not so sure! It is said that providing you socialize them well with both Men and Women then this problem will not occur, but Codie has been around Both, since day 1 .

Welcome to the forum. :)

I do believe it's a myth that female Amazons don't like men, as my 13-year old Yellow Nape female LOVES my husband. Well, she loves everyone in the family for that matter. Each and every one of us can do anything and everything to her. :)

When Micah attacked you when your boyfriend "surprised" you is called MISGUIDED AGGRESSION. Amazons are quite notorious for that. Micah obviously does NOT like men, no matter what male it is. So when your boyfriend grabbed you, YOU were closer to her than he was, and she let her anger out on you. Please don't take it the wrong way, lol.

Believe it or not, I have a 5 month old male Amazon, who already shows misguided aggression. I can do anything with him, but when I'm holding him, and my son or husband come too close to me, he will try and nip MY hand since he can't get to them.

Best of luck with Micah :)

I don't blame her, not all women have the ability to tolerate men( jokes) . I think is probely that the man abused her or scared her in some way so now she relates men with bad memories.

Awww! You beat me to the punch. lol. Maybe the bird knows something that women don't.

I don't think a bird's sex would have anything to do with whether or not it prefers women or men--I just don't see how it could be genetically hardwired into a bird to know what sex another species is, and to have an innate preference. I think it is more likely learned behavior based on trauma and love--birds associate a certain "type" (gender) of human with how they've been treated.

I very respectfully disagree. :)

My Sam (5 month old DYH Amazon) has been with us since he was 8 weeks old. The first few days were rough because he knew none of us, so handfeeding him was quite difficult since he was merely afraid. Granted, I was the handfeeder, but all of us sweet-talked to him, sang to him, etc. It took Sam 3 days and I could do anything with him. Despite my husband's and kids' (24 & 21) BEST efforts, he will have NOTHING to do with them to this day.

He won't even as much as step up for my family. He will, however, quickly and effectively remove skin if they tried. :32:

I totally agree with you Wendy on this one! I have had Codie since she was 11 Weeks old and after only 2 Weeks she decided that I was the only person she was going to bond too! I like you can do absolutely anything with her, and no amount of coaxing from my Children or anyone else in the Family will stop them from being attacked :(

Wendy, I believe we got incredibly LUCKY with our Hunter, as she is NOT the norm for a mature Amazon. Sam IS the norm, and I think so is Codie ;) I've made "some" progress with Sam. At least the family can give him goodies without him fluffing up and growling, depending on what they're offering that is.

Ha ha.. Zons certainly do have their funny little ways! Codie is the same.. she will take a treat from Members of my Family, but, only If I am in the room

If I have to go away, she is fine with them cleaning her Cage and putting her food in etc, but there is NO WAY she will come out of that Cage, even though they leave the door open lol... As soon as I walk back in the door, she is out of that Cage in a jiffy and practically jumping into my arms :)

I am so glad it was me she bonded with, as I am the one that is with her all day :)

AAAAWWW!!! My oldest son was brave enough to pick Sam up once when he accidentally landed on the floor. All was fine until I came running around the corner to see what had happened. Sam saw me, looked at Mike (son), looked at his finger and almost in slow motion, cartoon-like lowered his beak and WHAM took a chunk out. Thank God Mike stayed perfectly calm, put Sam on his perch, walked outside and THEN let out a scream (won't repeat what he said here...)

I'm really happy as well that Sam picked me over anybody else. I'm the ONLY one home all day, lol.

I believe that in this instance with Micah that with the boyfriend coming up from behind and Micah biting was displaced aggression along with their so called "protection" of their owner or since we are the chosen one "mate".

I have been bitten by Pancho really bad once and that is when my Son walked into the room and came up behind me.
Pancho's chosen sex of people is Guys. When he came to me i was told he disliked woman (of which i am most certainly one LOL)
He actually likes my sons neither of them are really bird people. They will interact and care for them if i am away once i am back i am Mom again and Yes Pancho calls Maaa when he wants something LOL he also says Get Out when he wants me to leave him alone.

In this case i believe be is guy or gal anyone who entered behind her would have been perceived a threat and Micah would have warned her in the way she was hardwired to know how to do

Mind you i am not a expert this is just my thoughts and experiences :)
