Male vs. Female

I have all female birds. My Senegal is very loud. We decided to get a Senegal because they are supposed to be a "quieter parrot". A friend of mine has a 13 yr old male that is very quiet, talks and beeps, but rarely screams. She also has a male African Grey that hardly talks at all. My female African Grey is a chatter box that never shuts up. Are female African parrots normally the more vocal of the sexes? I know female lovebirds are the more dominate sex too. Is it true for all African species?

My first Senegal Kelly was a female and one of the quietest birds I've ever known. The only time she was loud was when she knew I was leaving for the day and I got that long sad sounding "squeeeeeeeeeeeeek". She greeted me loudly with her special name for me when I came home, "pre-T-bird". Other than that, she hardly made a sound.

Sidney, my male Senegal is a little louder. But in comparison to the two Blue Crown Conures he is quiet though he will screech from time to time in protest if they are making a racket. And he contact calls when I'm not around. But when things are quiet, so is he.

As for the differences in gender, I would have to say that the males are the more vocal just in my experience. But since I'm comparing just one of each sex that are living in different environmental noise levels, that really is not an indication of much of anything. The only other indication I have that a male is more vocal is because of my vet. She is a certified avian vet near West Palm Beach, FL and her comment to me when I brought Sid to her for the first time and we were determining his gender is that male Senegals are "very full of themselves."

It may be that your girl was raised in a noisy environment and she thinks that noise is the normal thing to do. Or just her personality. You might be able to train her that noise is not desired but since I've never had any luck in getting my conures to believe that peace and quiet are good things I'm not the best one to give any tips on how to go about it.

My female Senegal is the quietest of all my birds and I would say my female Red-bellied parrot comes second. My two male Meyer's would be the noisiest.

I only have male pets period! I've never owned a female pet. Dogs, cats, Mr. Precious. I guess that's why I have 3 daughters & no sons. lol.
