I “rescued” an Alexandrine (now known as Riffraff :)) from a pet shop on Tuesday. I just couldn’t leave him/her there in that tiny cage, all alone with a bucket of budgie seed. I bought a cage then and there which is only very temporary until I get a proper cage. I now have some stainless steel dishes to replace the plastic ones and whilst he is settling amazingly quickly -already taking food from my hand through the cage bars - I don’t want to freak him out when changing the food dishes. So my question is when would be the best time to make the change? Morning, night? Any advice gratefully received.

The way I work it with my critters is that I leave the bowls low in the cage, usually on the bottom of the cage, early in the morning. I move them up over 2 days until they're where their usual bowls are. Or I leave it on top of their cage (depends on the bird) for a day or two. I generally leave them on one side of the cage so the birds can see them, but don't have to interact with them unless they're curious.

Good luck to you! :D.

Thank you for rescuing Riffraff from a life of drugery! Morning would allow Riffraff (love the name) all day to get acclimated before lights out and bedtime. I don't see any advantage to doing the change in the evening, though other members may disagree.

Post pictures of your new friend! We love to see each others' birds.
