Making a perch..what is a good bird safe glue.

Howdy hi.....

Making a PVC perch.....

what would a bird safe glue be for the fittings? I remember also in a post ( and can't locate it for the life of me) a type of footing cloth used over the PVC....any ideas?

I thought some sort of medical wrap or cloth...not sure.

Anyway....going away from the wooden perches as they chew them
up in a hurry and a bit expensive to replace.... They go through a ladder a week.

Why don't you just go with Dragon wood? Willie used to go through wood perches every week. I replaced their perches with Dragon wood and they have not chewed through them at all.

What your thinking about using to wrap is vet wrap.

CPVC is more safer to use over PVC. You can use regular CPVC cement to attach it.

I agree with Mike, once the CPVC glue has dried (less than 15 minutes), it is inert and not dangerous to your birds, just do you gluing in a well ventilated area.....

When gluing woods, a white carpenter's glue is safe, once it dries...children's glues, like Elmer's and Lepage are usually not strong enough to stand up over a period of time.....

Ditto on the glue, for the wrap, gorilla tape is what Birdman666 uses. The other stuff is vet wrap.

When my husband made our shower pvc stand, the pieces fit so tightly together that he didn't bother with glue. It's quite sturdy. He also sanded the perch area with fine sandpaper and Sailor had no trouble hanging on without slipping even when water is all over it. We didn't find it necessary to use glue or wrap. And this way if we ever want to change any part of the design it can be pulled apart. Just my two cents

Yeah, dragon wood.... it's a bit pricy ....I've spent $1200 dollars last year alone in the amount of perches I have for 15 cages and in gazebo out side.
each Bird has 3 cages and 3 perch stands...., not including the ones in Gazebo. I have Buzz saws for birds....

PVC is a fraction of that cost....Vet wrap.....That's it...thanks!!!!!

Gorilla tape...really???? They don't tear that up? Good idea though, but just curious if they can tear it up or ingest it. Vet tape Is very good.

I switched from vet wrap to gorilla tape a few years back. Mine haven't chewed on it, and it holds up way better than the vet wrap did.

It cost me just very little to get dragon wood alone. I didn't think they were that spendy. I think nice sized ones are like $10 the last I checked while at the bird fair. They're 4 foot long and pretty thick made for a macaw.

I switched from vet wrap to gorilla tape a few years back. Mine haven't chewed on it, and it holds up way better than the vet wrap did.

I'm going to try that...I used gorilla tape for other odd things as it's some pretty tough tape.... never thought of using as a bird perch wrap....will have to try it.

Woww...cheap down there in TN....Yeah I have several perches of dragon wood of various lengths and thicknesses...usually around the 20-30 range at pet store or bird store....

However the high price I'm referring to is the 4 to 5 foot dragon wood tree perches on bases....with several branches....they run 375 to 500 a piece depending where you buy them... I have 3....

Pretty awkward and bulky to move from place to place...PVC is much lighter..... less costly.

Hey Hawk you need dragonwood ? I have tons. If you want to texture the PVC use a rotary rasp on your drill.

Hawk, those are Java trees (not dragonwood) I have 2 enormous ones pushed together for my big macs and zons, and yeah, they are outrageously priced. They are also slowly but surely getting demolished by the big macs. :54: I'd NEVER buy another one because of that.

I wished I would have known someone on the forum could get it. My local pet store said they would get a pallet of manzanita in but they never did so I ordered some online. Is dragonwood better than manzanita? Stronger or harder?

I will never use anything BUT dragonwood. It's hard, yes. It's not as hard as manzanita, but it's also not slippery. My macs (especially Ripley) WILL chew wood, no matter what type. The manzanita perch I had for a little while actually splintered when Ripley got started on it.

I don't know jack about trees and was sold 3 similar to this as dragon wood...and it's a java tree??? whoa I got taken on that one... I wonder if java is softer than dragon wood....might explain how they are chewing them up faster...not sure....but it's not a hard wood from what I can tell ...

Have you checkout your local bird fair schedules??? I know there's a vender that goes around to different bird fair and sell dragon wood and they also make the dragon wood stand like your Java stand. They run around $150 to $200 I have a dragon wood stand for my medium to small sized birds that I bought from the vender.

The good fairs are a ways off yet.....Went to one at the expo center last summer and hardly anyone showed up....they closed it several hours early.

I can't see the point in the bird fairs... every vendor wants top overpriced dollars for everything......It's no wonder no one is showing up at them
anymore....kind of heart breaking too as some birds are way over priced.

I haven't been using any sort of glue on my PVC perches. The force fit holds fine for my purposes. If you want to, just get the proper solvent cement for the pipe you are using. If you're using plain white PVC, there's a clear cement that will look neater. You do not need to use primer, you're not worried about this holding water under pressure. The cement once it's dried should not have any effect on the bird. It just melted the PVC together (and if you are doing it right, most will be inside the pipe anyhow.

What I used for grip on the PVC shower perch I made is just duct tape. Seems to work fine for my Quaker.

My wood perches all use force fit for the round dowels. I do have a few (storebought) wood perches, and I used threaded inserts for the stud (that normally gets the washers and wingnuts for the cage).
