Major Mitchel's just a few ?

My dream bird is a Major Mitchel Too does anyone here have experince with them I know about noise level of too's but are they louder or quieter than others and their temperment ? the one I met was such a doll to me his name was Gaby and had been returned three times to the pet store where I met him and the owner was quick to caution me that he wasn't friendly as he climbed onto my hand and tucked his head for a scratch, is that usual ?and how much should one be I've found them form 1200 to 1600 $

I have only ever known 1 person to own a major mitchel, all the ones I have seen are between 3 and 5 grand. I have always been enamored by their beauty.

MM2s are beautiful! I have two friends that own them. One is a male MM2 about 4 yrs old and the other a female just 2 yrs old. MM2s are recommended for experienced bird owners as they tend to sometimes have aggressive behavior, esp. males. These Toos are mostly kept in aviary situations as they tend to develop behavioral problems and can be quite dangerous when they reach sexual majority. Depending where you live they range from $2000-2600. They are actually not recommended as pets are should be kept to breed to help populate their decreasing numbers.

I don't personally own a cockatoo, but I did read an article in an Australian parrot magazine (as that is where I am from ) about how many behavioural issues they have down the line. They are very sensitive and when handled incorrectly, withdraw and are not able to be handled by their owners, whom they once were very bonded with, at all!
I would read as much as I possibly could on Major Mitchell's and talk to people who own them, before making any decisions. But I truly believe them to be an untame bird, who really need to be free to be happy.

Like most of the larger cockatoos, the Major Mitchell is a poor choice for a pet...

Ok, For years leadbeaters aka major Mitchell's have been listed as a very poor pet choice. Having handfed a couple and knowing quite a few (my breeder friend currently has 3to babies she's handfeeding now). First if you have no bird experience then just rule out a cockatoo, second... if you have to ask how loud it is, odds are it's too loud for you and your family. All the cockatoos have big voices (including RB2's, MM2's, and the entire sulfur crrst group. Fyi black palms, and all 'toos are noisy. We charge $3500 for MM's. Find a breeder and discuss your life honestly to see if one would be happy in your home.
