Coatings on Christmas trees, artificial and or real are often toxic. Don't let your bird nibble on the tree or even near it. It is not true that a bird knows what is good for him to eat, he will taste things just because they look good, don't let that taste be his last! Birds in the wild have been known to eat tinsel, thinking it is a beautiful worm.
Well, we got our tree (real) up this past week, we have talked about how to safeguard it from the birds for months prior. Happy to say it's been left alone completely (so far) but only the GW's have really had access to it at any time. The GW's rarely leave the cage area unless they're looking for one of us, the Zon's always come into the office as does the Hahn's. My biggest concern is the fertilizer in the tree stand.
it would probably be safer to buy a permit and go out and find your perfect tree in the mountains!! i love doing that its so much fun and i dont think they use any pesticide or fertilizer in the mountains! you still dont know what wild birds landed on it but i figure that theres a better chance of them getting sick with the fertilized ones then the wild ones...still try and keep them away though
We do artificial. Erins flown in it twice and just chills lol. We made sure to invest in plastic ornaments. Ours is in our room with Erin and she has access to everything in our room, as she isnt caged, but she doesnt chew on anything unless its given to her
