My husband and Our mac eat macadamia nuts all the time. I never tried them before, until he bought a bag. To me they taste bitter and I never ate them much after that. Every now and then I will eat one just to see if the taste changes for me. Our macaw eats it like its the best thing ever and so does my husband. I also don't like the taste of almonds or brazil nuts. I cant describe it, but its like every time I taste a plain nut there is a bitter aftertaste...is this just me or are we buying rancid nuts? I read that you can smell rancidity because its strong like paint thinner. These nuts always smell normal and natural. Im just becoming concerned that my macaw is eating bad nuts because they taste weird to me.

By the way, I never ate any nuts other than peanuts and pecans and cashews most of my life.

I personally love macadamia nuts and I have never tasted a bitter aftertaste, but everyone's taste buds are different. Since they taste good to your husband, I would think they are not rancid.

Thats kind of what I thought. He eats them all the time like its candy. My husband always knows when something is bad too, cause he can taste and smell it. He's a picky eater. My bird is picky as well. We bought a bag of zupreem that we did not know was recalled and he would not eat it. It was like he knew something was wrong. It smelled different and I returned it the same day for a new bag. I thought maybe he would be the same way with a bad nut. So it must be my taste buds are not used to them. The downside to all this is that i may never be able to truly tell when a nut is rancid if I already don't like them :-(
