Kiwi : Indian Ringneck Parrot RIP, taken far too young, Mango : Lovebird, 5 years old 2014, Sprite : Pineapple green cheek, <1 2014
So recently a friend had about 7 Linnie chicks recently hatched! We weren't looking for another bird, but we were open to getting a pair of Linnie's.

So I was cruising Craigslist looking for a doe rabbit, and came upon mango, a 5 year old lovebird!

Well, I emailed them out of curiosity, and got a response...

'Sorry we did not get back to you sooner. You email was in our spam and I
just found it.

Here is our story with Mango. One of our daughter's friends bought Mango as
a wee bird and then went on vacation with her family 3 weeks later. We were
bird sitting her as we had 2 parakeets who would keep her company.
Unfortunately the friend's family had a family emergency and didn't come
back to >Our town< for a year at which point they didn't want Mango any more.
We were not really interested in keeping her long term as we already had
plenty of pets (one is a cat which is not best for a bird!) but we kept her.
She is now about 5 years old.

She is sociable, interacting by talking to anyone in the room or to anyone
she can hear in a nearby room. She is very territorial about her cage and
will bite hard if someone puts their fingers through or even when we give
her food and water. But if she comes out of her cage and flies around,
climbs on you, sits on your hand, she is much more gentle. She likes to take
a bath in a small bowl in the sink. She'll fly back to her cage when she is
ready to go back in. We never trained her to "talk" but she does
mimic/reply when you whistle or talk to her. We also never trained her to do
tricks.

We did have two cockatiels in a cage next to her for the first 3 years that
we had her but both died as they were very old. I don't really know how she
would do with another bird in the room now.

She does need a lot more socialization and interaction than we can give her
with our busy schedule, two kids, other pets and I think we always thought
we would give her away since we never intended on keeping her. It has just
taken us 5 years to get around to it.

She has a cage with food and water dishes, a cosy hut, some old toys, a
cuttle bone, a cover and blanket for the cage, a bag of food, a book about
Lovebirds, and possibly the stand we have her cage placed on.

We are not asking for any money as we did not buy her ourselves. She does
need her beak and nails trimmed which means a visit to the vet (Vet
Animal hospital charges about $60 for that) so that is enough of a cost.

Thank you for your interest and please let us know if you have any more
questions or if you would like to meet her.'

Hmmm.... Does she seem too much to handle? Should we stick to some more personable(younger/easier to mold) Linnie's? Or should we take this poor girl? She's free (well $60 for her beak/nail trim, but her beak looks fine? I can trim nails fine, and have blood stop powder in emergency, but we'd still want to get a health check up), but she's territorial about her cage, and we don't know how she'll do with another bird.

I also like knowing where our next parrot(s) come from, and buying them from a friend would kinda keep me at ease about their health. But she's so cute, and lovebirds seem sweet. Lovely music! How are they in terms of personality?

Well.... We're going to meet the lovebird so I reposted the question.

For me, I always take the one who needs me the most:)

I was actually looking for a lovebird when I got the linnies. I couldn't find any in the color I had my heart set on. Then there was the ad for the linnies...don't regret it. They are great quiet birds. Very entertaining to watch.

fingers crossed it all works out! lovebirds are trouble, but they are loving and loyal.

How loud are they? I know Linnie's are generally quiet, but say, compared to an IRN? Or are they like a budgie, just loude?

lovebird:) she needs you the most. the little lines will be sold in a week flat, but chances are that poor lovebird will be alone for a while:(

Well, guess who we got?!

Here are the toys I removed

This is a bell. The paint is peeling. Could I keep it? She seemed to like it.

I added a toy, and a natural wood perch - she only had dowels and one with some sand paper ! And she had like 5 mirrors, and 5 bells. And one didn't even have anything on it, just a bell and chain!

That being said, the people were VERY nice, they even bought us another package of food, and gave us a homeade cage cover, a book on lovebirds, and some treats!

She's a bit bitey. Likes to screech next to ears. Will bite you if you stick your fingers in the cage.

She's fully flighted but not very well - barely can fly! I think she's fat, but I haven't touched her yet to tell (I usually feel the breast bone).

First thing my mom did was bring kiwi out of the cage... Ok bye bye separation period.. I'm going to schedule a vet visit though. I'm also working on making a few toys for her.

Also should I keep the cozy? She seems to like it. Looks home made. Not sure from what - fleece maybe? Has cardboard on the bottom.

Oh I love her she is so cute!

I have two lovebirds, they are so great! You should try playing some youtube videos of other lovebirds they love it. I would leave the fleece cozy mine have one too and they really like to lay down on top of it to sleep.

My lovebird must haves:
Super Bird Wind Chimes Hanging Bird Toy
Lixit Lava Chew Beak Conditioner for Birds
Heated perching rod
Light
Comfy Perch rope perch
Cork toys

I also have mine on Roudybush pellets and they love it.

She is! (:

I shall!

That's good. I'll look into some of that. I have a petco gift card and need some new perches + toy making stuff. The poor baby had no natural perches!

Ah, yes, she's eating zupreem right now. The women even bought us a new bag since her old one was running low. Yay, free food. Use it to ease her on a new diet.

Your new lovebird is too beautiful, lovely colouring

Sure she will settle down quickly

Enjoy her

Oh I'm so glad you picked her. She needed a real family. My lovebirds really loved/love their hidey huts or soft sleep sacks, except Olliver has taken to sleeping in his coconut. I would keep it or something similar. Grab some millet for a treat/training. Something tasty helps build some rapport. Olly is hand shy so he's stepping up on a dowel for me at first. Congrats!
