- Kiwi : Indian Ringneck Parrot RIP, taken far too young, Mango : Lovebird, 5 years old 2014, Sprite : Pineapple green cheek, <1 2014
So recently a friend had about 7 Linnie chicks recently hatched! We weren't looking for another bird, but we were open to getting a pair of Linnie's.
So I was cruising Craigslist looking for a doe rabbit, and came upon mango, a 5 year old lovebird!
Well, I emailed them out of curiosity, and got a response...
'Sorry we did not get back to you sooner. You email was in our spam and I
just found it.
Here is our story with Mango. One of our daughter's friends bought Mango as
a wee bird and then went on vacation with her family 3 weeks later. We were
bird sitting her as we had 2 parakeets who would keep her company.
Unfortunately the friend's family had a family emergency and didn't come
back to >Our town< for a year at which point they didn't want Mango any more.
We were not really interested in keeping her long term as we already had
plenty of pets (one is a cat which is not best for a bird!) but we kept her.
She is now about 5 years old.
She is sociable, interacting by talking to anyone in the room or to anyone
she can hear in a nearby room. She is very territorial about her cage and
will bite hard if someone puts their fingers through or even when we give
her food and water. But if she comes out of her cage and flies around,
climbs on you, sits on your hand, she is much more gentle. She likes to take
a bath in a small bowl in the sink. She'll fly back to her cage when she is
ready to go back in. We never trained her to "talk" but she does
mimic/reply when you whistle or talk to her. We also never trained her to do
tricks.
We did have two cockatiels in a cage next to her for the first 3 years that
we had her but both died as they were very old. I don't really know how she
would do with another bird in the room now.
She does need a lot more socialization and interaction than we can give her
with our busy schedule, two kids, other pets and I think we always thought
we would give her away since we never intended on keeping her. It has just
taken us 5 years to get around to it.
She has a cage with food and water dishes, a cosy hut, some old toys, a
cuttle bone, a cover and blanket for the cage, a bag of food, a book about
Lovebirds, and possibly the stand we have her cage placed on.
We are not asking for any money as we did not buy her ourselves. She does
need her beak and nails trimmed which means a visit to the vet (Vet
Animal hospital charges about $60 for that) so that is enough of a cost.
Thank you for your interest and please let us know if you have any more
questions or if you would like to meet her.'
Hmmm.... Does she seem too much to handle? Should we stick to some more personable(younger/easier to mold) Linnie's? Or should we take this poor girl? She's free (well $60 for her beak/nail trim, but her beak looks fine? I can trim nails fine, and have blood stop powder in emergency, but we'd still want to get a health check up), but she's territorial about her cage, and we don't know how she'll do with another bird.
I also like knowing where our next parrot(s) come from, and buying them from a friend would kinda keep me at ease about their health. But she's so cute, and lovebirds seem sweet. Lovely music! How are they in terms of personality?
