Lovebird Lutino plucking feathers in the back

Hello,

I'm new here, thank you for accepting me.
I have a Lutino Lovebird, 8 years old. Never had any problems and always been my best friend.

Last week I saw he plucked some feathers at his bottom. His skin was a bit hard an had some wounds. I went to the vet immediately. He told me to smear the naked skin with Daktarin cream, 2 times a day. So I did it.

Now, 5 days later, he plucked all the feathers of his tail. This morning I putted on the cream, everything looked allright. When I came back a few hours later, all the feathers of his tail were gone.

I really don't know what to do now. I hope you guys may know what it can be or what I can do.

Did you go to an AVIAN CERTIFIED vet? Because gram stains and blood work should have been done.

You did the right thing my going to the vet!

Back to the vet asap, or try to find a CAV (try university-clinics etc.).


Bizzy little birdy, but not in a good way.


So the genaral antifungal/anti-yeast does not seem to be doing its job - time to get a swab&culture done.

Is it the time of year? another vent-picking one...
Is it hormones going bananaas or it is the autumnal fungy-overload?
(lots of people who are sensitive to mold and spores in general are having issues as well)

I totally agree, you need to find a new Veterinarian, either a Certified Avian Vet or an Avian Specialist who only treats birds. Or you need to take him back to this same Vet and demand that they do a Fecal Culture immediately (fresh poop sample if you can get one to take with you), and then routine blood-work.

The Daktarin is used to treat topical fungal infections, and this would only help if he had an external fungal infection of his skin...Most of the time when birds suddenly and out of nowhere start plucking the feathers from around their Vent/Cloaca area, as well as their tails and on their legs, it's because they have either a bacterial or fungal infection in their GI Tract, or a Kidney Infection. If he's now plucked his entire tail, he's really in some discomfort or is having terrible itchiness due to some type of internal infection, or it could even be a parasite of some kind. The Fecal Culture/Gram-Stain will confirm or rule-out a GI Tract infection, and the blood work will show a kidney or liver issue...
