Floyd - Alexandrine
My Alex, Floyd, is 6 months old today and has been with us for 3 months. He is settling in brilliantly!

He is fairly cage territorial and can be a bit bitey but is certainly improving. i have been home from work for the last two weeks due to an injury and we are spending all day everyday together (which has made a huge difference in his behaviour). Floyd is not to keen on affection but will come and sit on my lap or preen my arm hairs when he wants some loving. His new favourite game is burrowing in my dress or shirts, he also tries to burrow behind my back and when i lift my back off the back of the chair he loves running back and forward behind me.

Just a couple of questions -

How often to you bathe your fids? Can they be over bathed?

Also, how can you tell if the little guy is trying to talk? He loves making noise and responds to me when i chat to him. But how do i know if he is attempting to articulate words?

Thanks All :)

hi camille, glad to hear u and floyd are getting along well. im in the same boat, i have been off work ever since i got oxy and so he is very cuddly and my 2 new guys are getting to be that way too.
because of the ridiculous heat up here atm i give my boys a bath every day.... most days just with a fine mist a few times a day and atleat 3 times a week in the shower.

oxy is about 6.5months old and if you ask me he been trying to talk since he was bout 4months. just listen to him when he is chattering away, and see if you can determine what you think he is trying to say and repeat it often.
is there any particular phrase/ word he seems to respond to more?
just keep at it.
since i got my new guys (already talking) oxy seems to be trying harder to talk and is alittle more articulate

I give Nimbus a hose down once or twice a week, she doesn't like bird baths like my conures, she absolutely looooooves it and will stay in it wings up and fluffing up until she's drenched :p I need to get a video of it, so funny to watch ^.^ I got one of those multiple setting hose bits, she loves mist the most then shower, my conures try and get in the jet one O.o which would not end well...

It's great the little guy is settling in well! As for bathing, there is no such thing as too much for a parrot. They naturally live in wet climates, the only thing you have to worry about is making sure they are warm enough while they're drying off. Otherwise, its actually good for them to have frequent baths, it improves the appearance of their feathers as well as helps keep their skin moist. Kiwi takes a shower daily with my husband, and then treats himself to a bath in his water dish every afternoon lol. As for talking, you can definitely hear when they're trying to form words, vs. just making parrot noises. It's like how babies make their first words, kind of garbled, but still decipherable. Since parrots have different tongues and vocal cords than us, they will never quite be spot on with how their speech sounds, but it's clear enough to understand. Best of luck to you!
