When our Chinese Water Dragon died after we had him only a couple of weeks (long, horrible story, in which we haven't spoken to the people responsible in a couple of years) our bearded dragon ended up laying eggs. Anyways, our Water Dragon we had named Godzilla, Zill for short. Our beardie laid eggs literally two days after we came home to find him the way he was. We just knew it was our Zill trying to come back. So we named the first egg Zill Jr. Sadly, none of her three eggs made it. My point is (with this long drawn out story) I don't think it's a horrible idea to name your new friend Jimmy.

Ultimately it's up to you. These are things you need to ask yourself. Are you ready for a new bird? How would you feel if he had the same name?

Welcome- and so sorry to hear about the loss of your Alexandrine. Many of us can sympathize with you.

As mentioned above, naming your new bird Jimmy may be a good idea, however it is entirely up to you. Please keep in mind that no two birds are alike, and if you get a new bird named Jimmy, please don't be upset or disappointed if he isn't similar to your previous Jimmy. It would not be fair to you, because you would be upset, nor would it be fair to the bird to be so confused about why his humans are disappointed. I think if you're willing to accept with an open mind and an open heart a completely new personality, then you'll be just fine. :)

Hope you enjoy your stay on the forums and best of luck on your search for a new bird to welcome to your family.

thanks for the message and sorry to hear about your Zill. I didnt have JImmy - it was my sisters and he became so close to me.. he is alexandrine - i just dont have words... I am so deeply moved with your story about Zill... specially when you said, it was your zill, coming back to u - its like Hindu reincarnation. .. thats exactly what my sister said ... she was crying as well...

i soo loved him that i want to know if getting the SAME breed - ie alexandrine - and having the same name - will somehow bring my Jimmy back in my life again.. ?

you know in Hindu culture, they say, YOU STOLE MY THOUGHTS - what you said - were just my thoughts..

ie.. no 2 birds are alike and if i get the same breed and the same name - will my expectation be getting a replica of jimmy? - but its like having a loved one die - and then getting new love in your life and unconciously comparing your new partner with the departed one ,,,

thats why i asked this question in this forum. and i know it sounds silly, but i am glad when you said, many can sympathize with me on this forum..

i guess i need a psychologist ! i am really sad.. i never owned a bird, this was my sisters and before 20 days, i had never even fed or petted him, and i read so much about handling parakeets and alexs and so on, how to train and he used to bite him, but within 10 days, he used to be in my fingers and hands and he even used to kiss me ..
gosh i hate this sad incidence

i somehow want to have another bird, and save him from captivity and i hope i can recover from my loss AND free a bird from thse caged captivities that the sellers put them in - this is specially true in 3rd world countiries like india..

can you PLEASE do me favor, because i am not really a brid owner, i know so little, can YOU PLEASE - tell me about alexandrine parrots and their psychology and also about other breeds as well ? whats a good source for that

I have a Huge house in the usa - and a veery big 7000 square feet house in india - and i want to get the best cage, best whatver for my 'NEW jMMY'

ITS ALMOST 6 AM HERE AND THIS IS THE 3RD DAy and i havent slept and i am reading these forums and i am so sad embarassed and ashed that people in the west care so much about their parrots - i have google parrots and see mostly usa sites, none are indian and only in usa, we have - if you loose your parrots, inform here and there and call police and spca and whatever - we have nothing here..

no one cares.. that a parrot is also like a human !

makes me even more sad..
and now, i want to know all i can - and do the best preparation i can, so that i have my new jimmy healthy, safe and happy

Thank you for your kind words. I never thought I would see the full circle of life in a matter of two days. When she laid that first egg we immediately got over our grief and put all our concentration on giving these eggs everything they needed.

I think when you find him you'll know. You'll know he's the one you want to adopt whether it be another alexandrine or other type of parrot. You'll also know if the name Jimmy will fit him like it did your other Jimmy. My husband went through the same ordeal when his family dog passed away. He said he didn't want to have another dog because and especially not another lab boxer mix because he would be comparing the dog to Duke and be disappointed that he wouldn't be like Duke. Then three years ago a friend of ours had puppies and one of them wouldn't leave our side every time we went over there. We ended up taking her home and can't figure out how we ever lived without her.

I don't know anything about Alexandrines. We have a Sun Conure and he is just a hoot. He can be loud at times, but it's something we're working on. He's a really smart little bird, and vain! Oh he's just the most conceited little thing ever. Looks at himself in his mirror constantly and talks to himself while getting all fluffy. Loves to be on your head, no other spot will do. It's either your head or not at all. He'll get on your shoulder long enough to give you a kiss but then it's off to your head. He's definitely been teaching me a lot about patience that's for sure. But we love him.

Unfortunately I'm not overly-knowledgeable about Alexandrines, but you can do a search on this forum or on google and read over what people's personal experiences with them are. I've only been around maybe 3 ever, and they were very young.

I have conures and a Pionus. I think pionus are wonderful, sweet, under-rated birds. You just never hear how great they are because they aren't very popular! And I have no idea how hard it would be to get one in India.
The conures are.. well.. loud! They make their presence known, and if they're not happy, they'll tell you loud and clear. They're goofy and expressive, and they seem to think they're much larger than they actually are.. Sort of like the Chihuahua of the bird world, if you would. :p

I second what Ducatimom said, if you take time to visit many parrots, large or small, you'll feel it when you meet the right bird. Visit babies, adults, all sorts of birds and see how they make you feel. Maybe your "jimmy" is out there somewhere, or maybe you'll feel a totally different name is much more fitting! You never know until it happens.

There's lots of information here about many different types of birds, I think you'll find your perfect friend when the time is right. :)

Hi Ajay

Very sad to hear about your loss. I also felt devastated when a few of my budgerigars flew away. I felt very devastated.

You should keep in mind though that Alexandrines are becoming rarer by the day in India and Birdlife international has upgraded their endangerment status from Lower risk to Near Threatened. For more information, please visit the birdlife international website.

Also you should be aware that they are illegal to sell bu y or own in India. My request to you is to not encourage the wild bird trade. A better way of honouring Jimmy's memory could be to join a birding or natural history organization like Bombay Natural History Society or Bird watchers' society of Andhra Pradesh. If you are extremely keen on a pet, try rescuing a captive bred foreign species like a Cockatiel from any of the rescues.

cheers

hi

can you point me to any rescue place in india?

thanks

Hi ajay, sorry to hear what happened to the alex...however that is it's natural habitat and will most likely hook up with its own kind. You may want to wait until you get to the US before you consider adopting another bird, as getting a live bird from India to the US will be next to impossible. Also a bird you adopt here will be captive born and bred, whereas many parrots in India (native species) are wild caught or stolen chicks.
The only parrot rescue I know about in India is in Mysore...Shuka Vana. Look it up, there's also some stuff on YouTube under SGS birds. :)
Again, sorry about your Alex.
