Loss of mobility on one foot??

Hi Everyone,

I have a 23 years old Nanday conure (Emerald) who has up until this point lived a trouble free, healthy life.

She's suddenly lost dexterity on her left foot and is having trouble with general mobility because of this. My initial suspicion is maybe she had a stroke/seizure? She can move the leg up and down, but can't seem to open the foot or grasp with it. She is alert and eats and drinks and is sitting on a perch using her good right leg.

I realize everyone's going to say 'take her to the vet', but I don't think there are any specialized avian vets in my area. I think most vets will 'see' a parrot, but I don't know if they actually have any real specialized training in complex avian medicine. I'm going to look into it though. I'm also concerned about the stress taking her to the vet will cause on her.

Has anyone experienced this sort of issue themselves?

Emerald has been on a predominantly pellet diet with a mixture of dried fruits/seeds mixed in.

Thank you!

She passed away last night before I could get her to the vet. :(

Thank you everyone for your overwhelming level of advice and support :(

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Sorry Emerald. Some of us only check in once or twice a week. Bird emergencies can obviously come up at a moments notice. If I had to guess I'd say your original thought was correct, but if you are planning on getting another bird in the future, I'd recommend a necropsy so you can be sure it wasn't something communicable.

My Jenday passed away before I could get him to a vet a few years ago. Now with my 2nd bird I've gotten a better idea of what I will do in an emergency. For future reference, livestock vets are familiar with birds and can be of use in emergencies.

And I am truly sorry for the loss of your companion.

I am so sorry to see this. I hope you are doing ok.
