I have wanted to own a parrot since I was a child and had experience with an absolutely charming scarlet macaw. I grew up with parakeets and cockatiels and always enjoyed birds. It only recently occurred to me that I can actually do this now as my company i started is starting to bring in money and being somewhat of a homebody who works at home and rarely has company over, I would probably be a great fit for a parrot companion. I have always had animals till now. This is the first time in my life i haven't had a pet after my beloved ferret passed away a year ago.
I'm thinking that a parrot would be a year or so off and I would like to volunteer at a rescue or shelter for a couple reasons. 1. Most importantly I would like to make sure owning a parrot is something I truly want and can do even if I'm just cleaning cages and just being around them it will be more experience than i've had in the past with large parrots. 2. I want to make sure I'm not allergic to them. I've had pretty terrible asthma my whole life though it oddly has virtually disappeared since I moved to central texas despite all the greenery here. I am very allergic to cats and slightly allergic to other mammals, 3. If one of the bird falls in love with me and I with it we would have a good rapport already I could adopt one which I always prefer to do with pets. I would really like to rescue a mealy amazon if possible but I'm open to any amazon or possibly a macaw. At the moment I'm really thinking amazon.
I"m having trouble finding anything. Google turns up parrot rescues in Texas, the vast majority aren't actually in texas or further googling has people warning they're scams and not to deal with them or links to them are dead and they seem to not exist so I'm hoping maybe anybody here can point me in a good direction.
I live in Bryan in Brazos county and both Austin and Houston are within an hours drive. I"m willing to drive an hour and can volunteer about 4 times a month, maybe more.
Can anybody point me to the right direction?
