Hi, I am Jessica and hopefully soon I will be a new mom to a ringneck parrot. I just put a deposit down for a blue lacewing. I hope to train for free flight, talking and tricks but the first thing is bonding and lots of love.

I enjoy bird sitting for a friend who has a green wing and african grays.

Until my new baby comes home, I enjoy learning from reading and watching on forums and youtube.

Thank you so much for the add! :whiteblue:

Welcome Jessica! Congratulations on your baby bird :)
Is the bird DNA sexed? Do post pictures when he comes home!

With proper attention and care, Ringnecks make the most WONDERFUL pets! (Ask me, I’m obsessed haha). Be sure to read all that you can the Ringnecks section on the forum. Lots of information there.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask away!

Welcome. Exciting times, and very thoughtful of you to join and read up, and share your own experiences.
I find even after years of having Parrots, new ideas in food, behavior, toys, cages, and even learned about parrot 911 for lost birds.

Very cool!

Welcome!

I always feel compelled to say this to any new posters: If you have never owned a bird before (and even if you have), be sure to look into the dangers of PTFE/PFOA/Teflon and all of the weird places it hides (in and outside of the kitchen and inside and outside of heated appliances) It can be a clear-coating (on paper, fabric or metal), it can be mixed into metal during the molding process, or it can take on the characteristic look that most people expect-that thin black/grey/colored coating on the surface of many pans. My point is, in many cases, it's impossible to ID it visually, as many products containing it don't appear to have a coating have a coating and/or Teflon coated parts are hidden from view. You will have to call the manufacturer and give them the full names and abbreviations for PTFE/PFOA and Teflon (a brand)..It is in a lot of stuff and very dangerous for birds when heated. It can kill birds on separate floors of a home, so walls/doors aren't adequate protection from the off-gassing.

Also, make sure you don't use any cleaners, scented products, or air fresheners around the bird unless they are certified avian safe.

Lofty goals on the free flight I can't help it that still scares me even though many members do it. I mean I take my birds outside unharnessed but they are clipped.

{Members please don't post the bird while clipped can still fly away obligatory thing I know, I know, but I have a mental leash and I can outrun them even when they aren't flying down... I get it i've read it a million times. I can't even leave the room without my parrots calling and following I cant even take pee in the ajoining room without them and there are no predators in my area me and my flock are fine!!! }

what everyone else said, AND look at you kitchen frying pans, breadmakers, oil cookers, george foreman grills etc....there are safer alternatives to all if they use the nonstick chemicals listed...good post noodles.

Look a lot under the behavioral and ringneck forums for good advice.

Welcome Jessica! Looking forward to learning about your forthcoming ringneck!

Thank you for the warm welcome and thank you for all the advice! I do know about the telfon and even sented candles. I did own a GCC, that I named whisper because he was so quite until someone flushed the toilet and he found his voice! LOL
I also bird sit for a friend who has a green wing macaw and three greys. She has been a big help to me and I am going to be helping her more often.
Slow and easy wins the race, however in the end, safety, love and bonding are more important then tricks, talking and flying free outside. Those later three are bonuses to a feather child. :)

PS: I had given up Whisper when I went into a convent to try to become a Nun.

Little Whisper was a cutie. Sometimes life throws big curves at us. It must have been hard to give him up.
