Living trees for Macaws to play in

Recently someone suggested that I get a living tree (potted) for my two Severe Macaws to use as a play area, rather than a "tree stand" made from dead branches, etc.

Has anyone ever tried this, and if so would you please give me some advice on what tree to buy?

Obviously it would have to be non-toxic, fast growing tree, with relatively hard wood, preferably with bark that can be "chewed", or stripped off!

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Greg,

If your little macs start stripping the bark and chew the foliage, a tree such as this won't be alive for very long. :)

Wendy makes a good point. A live plant would not last long around most birds. I personally would just stick with dead wood. It's not as though the birds will care, just so long as they have a place to play and have fun:) I might suggest a large java stand for 2 birds.

I agree too. I'd suggest just adding fresh branches to their play area or cage from time to time, to play in and strip.

Honestly, birds don't really care if they're sitting on a living or dead tree, as long as there's something to chew XD

I use the tree in my front yard for this. I haven't brought one indoors, but that would most definitely work, if you put it on a rolling plant stand. And it might even be cheaper given how much bird trees cost these days...

Personally, I make my big playstands out of vet wrapped PVC. I have a portable manzanita stand, and a homemade table with manzanita branches attached to it.

The live tree is the one in the yard. And they do like that one best.

How big do fast growing trees grow? Two issues would be what chemicals etc the greenery used and how big the tree will get (if the birds do not kill it). It is a good idea (and a idea I want to keep in the back of mind). Surfing on the internet I know these trees would be cheaper then buying a java tree. I gotten in the habit of making toys for my bird and currently even fixed one of Captain Jack's toys but I never done a big project. I want to make my own bird tree. I did order a small wooden play gymn (that was on sale) but I ended up having to go to the hardware store for help and had to buy a screw that would work (the screw that came with it was too big). But in the end it was put together. If anyone has detailed instructions and ideas on how I should proceed on this feel free to message me.
