Hi, I am new to the forums and decided it would be a good idea to register since to be able to converse with people that have the Amazon parrots as well. I just got my lilac crown Amazon parrot. His name is buddy and I got him at my local store. One of the reasons I got him was because he was in a cage that was to small for him, he looked unhappy and I just couldn't leave him. He steps up and so far hasn't bit, he does show you when he wants to be alone though. He does not like to be petted and he is a bit quiet for an Amazon. Do you guys think it is because he needs to get comfortable in his new habitat? Also when he was at the store he wasn't loud and he would just sleep all the time. I really want him to be happy, what can I do for him? Please help

Interact with him and socialize him best as you can. keep him near the center of activity in your home.Check out the many threads about his diet using the search feature at the top of the page. Ask questions ,we love to help but make an effort to educate yourself by reading some of the older threads. Tons of info here and very helpful folks. Welcome to the forum and life with an amazon.

Hello! I have fond memories of my Lilac I owned years ago. She was my traveling companion and went with me to Florida, Georgia, South Carolina. I remember her being a quieter Amazon. She was more apt to talk when you were out of the room. Although she was quite chatty when in the passenger seat. Don't worry, if Buddy is eating well and pooping normally he should come out of his shell in a few days. A veterinary exam is always a good idea once he settles in.

He is in transition. You've gotten good advice here - let him settle in, become part of the family, don't push him but welcome him & yes, a vet visit is a great idea.

We have a Panama Amazon & a Yellow Crowned Amazon. Neither is exceptionally loud, both are affectionate & so long as you "read" your 'Zon & accommodate his/her needs, I think you will find you have an amazing companion.

Oh, and when in doubt - look for Henpecked's comments - he really gets amazons.

Welcome to the forum. Smaller zons (which your lilac crown is) tend to be quieter than the larger ones. Amazons in general are known for being "perch potatoes" so it's very important to start introducing him to toys and encourage exercise to get him more active. Amazons don't tend to be big on petting, but they are social, so start including him in your day to day life as much as possible (and of course use common sense in what is or isn't a safe situation for him). Since he is brand new to you, it is a good idea to set up an appointment with an avian vet for a wellness check. That will establish you as a patient and make sure he's all healthy Best of luck and hope to see you around.

Hi and welcome! Congrats on your new zon! I am fairly new at getting back into the bird world so can't offer much advice. I've had my blue front amazon for about 2 months. She came from a non-social setting where she wasn't handled or allowed out of her cage. She was really very quiet for about 2 or 3 full days...and then she just let loose! Talking...singing...Yelling for us if we were out of sight. We did, after a few days, move her cage to a more central location in the house so she can see us all the time and that really helped. I'm sure your bird will come around with time and, if at all like mine, go from very quiet to very loud if you are out of sight...lol. Good luck and don't forget to post pics!

Hi! Congratulations on welcoming the most awesome variety of little bird into your family! The love of my life was a Lilac Crowned Amazon, named Bacci. He made every day a joy. He was so sweet and well behaved. Intelligent, playful, and he loved to have fun.

He is definitely in his adjustment period right now, and probably will be for a week or two, or maybe longer. I had great success in bonding with my LCA through clicker training and positive reinforcement. He was a fast learner, and loved the interaction. He also loved music, and REALLY loved to ride in the car, dancing and singing along to the radio. He also loved to eat, and would get super excited when he would see me take out a frying pan! (non Teflon, bird safe frying pan!)
So again, congratulations! You now have a great new best friend! I am so happy for you!

My lilac crowned amazon is 41 years old. And she's a quiet little bird. Loves people, but not fond of the touchie feelie stuff. I keep mine in a macaw sized cage. 40x30 playtop.

Give it time. Interact with the bird. Go at the bird's pace. This little bird is a lifetime companion, so you've got time. Be patient.
