I bought a Feather Brite bulb a few weeks ago and a desk clamp lamp to use with it.
Pepper (my Nanday) is afraid of the lamp, so I Ave had it gradually moved closer to the cage over the past couple of weeks. Today it is positioned properly above the cage. She was mildly displeased, but I put her food bowl on top of the cage in its regular spot and coaxed her up there with an almond. LOTS of encouragement for her being a BIG BRAVE BIRD!
I decided to try having her in the cage and under the lamp, so I put her in there with a towel covering half of the top so she could escape from the light and feel safe if needed.
She went in and stayed in the shadowed side (which is the side she spends most time in anyway) and would peek out up at the light. She started SLOWLY pacing and crawling up and down in the shadowed side with her wings out and fluffed up, every once in awhile peeking out to look at the light. She went in her nest (a cuddle ring) and started rubbing on it and making some noise. Paced a bit more and now she is sitting quietly in the nest napping.
And as I'm typing she's back at it with he pacing. The behavior almost looks sexual...now she's bobbing her head with her beak open, fluffed with wings spread slightly.
So the question is....is this behavior normal? I don't want her stressed, but she needs the lighting!
