Hello,

I just got a lesser sulfur crested cockatoo from a friend that is about 2 years old. He was very friendly with my friend. He did say that he had him for only about a week and was able to touch every feather on his body which he did in front of me. I just got him a day ago and I am not sure how to understand cockatoo body language. Every time I come near him, he repeatedly opens and closes his mouth like we do with ours when we are cold. What does this mean? Any suggestions on on training him and getting him more used to me with him raising his crest and fanning his tail all the time would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have been bitten by my amazon before and don't plan on getting bit by the cockatoo because I am sure it hurts a lot more.

my cockatoo does the beak thing too, she kinda clicks it, but she does it when she's having a cuddle so i take it as a happy chatter.
be patient and feed treats to her and talk soothingly. x

Opening and closing of the beak with Toos can mean different things. It can be a happy behavior and contentment or a warning to stay back. Warnings usually include fluffed up feathers, especially around the upper neck, raised crest and wings slightly away from the body. Contentment usually involves licking and face feathers fanned upward over the the sides of the beak. For the inexperienced Toos are very difficult to read in body language. Not to say you won't learn but take it slow and have patience. Don't force him to do something he is not ready for. It will backfire on you.
While you don't plan on getting bit, it may occur and Toos have a wicked bite due to a different shaped beak compared to other parrots. It is important to remember that though Toos tend to be great cuddle bugs stroking the entire body will lead to sexual frustration and behavior problems. Stick to head and face scritches only. You guy is probably scared and nervous with his new surroundings, sounds and people. Tale things slow and have lots of patience. I wish you much happiness!

Thank you greycloud. He does both while clicking his beak. Sometimes he has his crest raised and sometimes he has the feathers on the side of his beak fanned up around his beak. I will take things much slower and give him his space while I give him treats.

Update - He has become MUCH friendly and more relaxed with me. He comes really close to me to get food and bobs his head a lot while I am close. I am just scared to touch. I didn't mind getting bit by my amazon but cockatoos have a stronger and harder bite so I don't know how to approach him to pet him. Just a little scared. any help?

My girl would lay her head in my hand. She is such a sweet baby! Just don't be afraid of him. Just try touching his forehead and see what his reaction is. Give him treats at the same time to keep his beak occupied.
