Is there anyway I can figure out where my bird came from, or her age by her leg band? All it says is BBF 2129

What kind of bird is it? Look for clubs or societies of that kind of bird, and contact them to see if they have a band registry. Also you can try contacting leg band companies, but they likely will not have permission to give out that info. You can also try tracing back the line of possession of your bird, find out where the person you got him from got him, contact that person and find out where they got him, etc. If you can trace him back to a pet store they might have a record of him and have the breeder info. Good luck.

Could you double check the band. My budgie is bbfe0899. The first few times I looked I missed the e. Also there is a place called baby bird farm I called and they never called me back. If you get any closer please let me know

I'm her first owner. She came from PetSmart. No E on the band. Just BBF. I'm pretty sure that's Baby bird farm, but I haven't been able to contact them :/

Pets art should then be able to tell you the breeder and age, however they sometimes take birds from people other than breeders so getting the bird from pet smart does not guarantee you are the first owner. Is the band a closed or open band? Meaning, is there a split like a piece of metal was squeezed around her foot and closed, or like one solid piece was slid on as a young chick?

the parakeets at my store are all from Barney's Bird Farm in California and the rings most commonly read BBF, BBFE, BBFC, BBFA. I wouldn't doubt that they also supply some petsmarts.

you can find contact info online, although I have no idea if you'll get a response.

I work for Petsmart. They do not take animals from anyone to resell. It is possible that employees take/buy them and keep/sell them themselves (although I don't think it's allowed) but it is against policy for the store to take and sell an animal that did not come from the breeder. We don't know they age of the animals or where they come from. They just get delivered without any info. That's why I'm trying to figure out her leg band.

It does have a split in it.

Just tried to call barneys bird farm and it just kept ringing.

Hi all,
I'm new here, became a mom to a.cinnamon green cheek conure 2 days ago. Pretty sure he's a boy. I've been trying to find info on his bird band, and yes I have deciphered the coding. I figured I'd pass this I found along. Mochi has a blue band with BBF 6140. This is the band for Barney's in Chino. I was told his hatch date was either the 18th or the 24th of April. So, backwards dating since his day is double, it is just month and year. Now, if you look at your birds band, if it is a single digits of the month it will give the exact date. If it's a double digit it will just give month and year due to space. Hope this helps.

A little story... in the old days, info was easier to get, in some ways.
The bird store guy hooked me up.

When I walked into the bird store, the 3-month-old Rickeybird started to screech... ran/flapped to me, climbed me life a tree and rolled over onto his back in my arms. That was our beginning. Later, I traced the breeder by band. She and I were friendly for a while, exchanged photos. We could almost have been twins. Vey tall, long/big red hair and too much eye makeup *1984!). Our voices were very similar.
Can you imagine how that poor little guy felt when I walked in?? Almost makes me cry to re-live it!
I save the band.

Looking for ages and location of BBFE5023 and BBFE5605. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.:green2::blue1:

I don't think that's right, I've seen second hand birds for sale at my petco. A few months ago there was a white budgie in her own cage and came with her whole setup cage and toys for like 20 bucks. The paperwork stated she was not hand tamed and bites a lot.

Also, more recently, someone had brought a lorikeet in and the manager was showing me pictures but he was adopted within a couple days. She said the owner could no longer take care of him.

EDIT: I realized my mistake, we have a PETCO not a Petsmart.

It could very well be against policy! Our local pet smart took in a pair of canaries to re-sell, the manager explained their history to me. However I'm on an island in the middle of the ocean and a lot of people disregard policy here in a lot of businesses, such as letting pets into a store that sells open food.

Someone on some level knows which breeders supply which stores. If the managers don't know, then at least district managers should. Last year I bought a budgie from pet smart and because of a recent PBFD outbreak I wanted to know where the bird originated. I was able to find out which state the bird originated in, and the employee said she could find the name of the breeder if I wished, but I just needed to know the state.
