Least nippy type of parrot?

Hi,

I have a pet cockatiel, and I love him. He's very sweet and doesn't bite. I want to another bird to my household other than another cockatiel.

I thought a green cheek conure would be a good choice, but after playing with several and discussing them with owners, it seems like they are a little beaky or nippy.

Are there any other gentle types of smaller birds that don't have a tendency to be nippy?

Hugs,
Birdy

Well, every bird has the potential to bite. There is no guarantee unless you go with finches! How big do you want to go? Is there a particular species you are attracted to? Noise level? So many questions.

I'm looking to stay pretty small - nothing much larger than a Quaker. I live in an apartment, so I need to keep the noise level down.

I know that every bird will bite at sometime. I'm ok with that as long as its occasional and not the norm. And I prefer being bit by a beak without too much power behind it :)

If noise is an issue, don't get a quaker!
I highly recommend a lineolated parakeet. Very adorable, extremely sweet, playful birds. They come in many colors and do have the ability to talk.

I've read a little about lineolated parakeets. Thank you for the suggestion. I'll look into them :)

I'll suggest NOT a conure of any variety. All conures are rather nippy, it's what they do, they dig they chew. I have no shirts left that don't look like fishnet and I should buy stock in a bandaid company.

Parakeets are a great way to go. I think the love bird suggestion could be a really good idea too.

Yes. Parakeets are the #1 chocie if you don't want a bird that will have you draw blood when it bites. Plus if it does bite, it's quite ticklish. And parakeets provide endless entertainment!

Haha Auggie's Dad :)

From what I've experienced, I completely agree with you. I used a lot of bandaids when I watched my friend's conure for a few weeks. They sure are cute though!

Budgies are great. I wouldn't suggest a lovebird-all the ones I know are very LOUD and bite hard enough to draw blood. A nice female budgie doesn't make any noise, and males have a nice tweety song-without screaming. Budgies won't bite hard-not enough to draw blood. My budgies all love to chew on me, but it is a nice feeling, as they're doing it out of friendliness. I wouldn't say budgies are easy to care for ( which parrot is? ), but they are very rewarding. Good luck!

Budgies are a good choice. I'm partial to my Alexandrine, however, he's not at all touchable. Many Alex's talk well but our Max hasn't tried at all - he's still very young. He almost never screeches...probably less than 1x week.

I would go with budgies if you want to stay small and quiet because lovies and parrolets can be very nippy and anything else is bigger and noisier - well, except brotos which are also small and sweet but they are not easy to find.

I've never heard of a Broto. I'm guessing that is short for a longer name since Google isn't pulling up any results except for some type of sprout lol. :)

Budgies are cute but don't be fooled, they can bite and hurt if they want to. One of my client's budgies bit my hand and I had a sore buised hand for weeks after - ouch!

I'm with greycloud, Lineolated parakeets are becoming extremley popular and now come in many color mutations.........

The canary winged parakeets(a.k.a. Brotos) are very neat looking. I went to my birds store the other day and they had a couple of young ones. They almost look like lovebirds with really long tails.

Thanks for your suggestions! I bought a baby Lineolated Parakeet last night. I get to pick her up at the airport next Friday.

I haven't heard a bad word about Linnies, so I'm really excited about getting her :)
