Laying tile flooring?

We are going to redo our home floors to tile instead of carpet. As far as I know they are just grouting and sealing in the tile... Is it safe for the birds to be in the house? They are on the other end of the house but I'm not sure :/

Grout is likely OK , but I would worry about adhesives to keep the tile in place and sealer, well that sounds like it could be nasty. Consult the contractor, or if DIY, really check out the sealer container and the manufacturer. Personally, I would board Salty for a few days to let the fumes mitigate.

As said, grout should be safe, but not all! The thin set most likely will be an issue! I am assuming you are going over wood, based on your part of the country. In this case, a polymer based thin set will be used! Also, if the job is done right, you will be sealing the grout. The good stuff is bad for humans, deadly for birds!

I had my entire house tiled about 2 years ago, and carefully chose a contractor. He was well aware of chemical sensitivity issues, and advised us to clear the area of birds for at least one day. It was a chore keeping them in the garage, but everything turned out well. Love tile, so easy to keep clean, particularly with birds.

I would absolutely get your bird's out of the house! I immediately remembered a story I read either here or on another forum of a woman that had carpeting laid in her upstairs, and she was assured by the contractor that nothing toxic to birds was being used, no adhesives or anything....well her bird died, and it was because they used some type of electrical tool that heated up to press the carpet or something, and the tool was made of Teflon!!! So the bottom line is that even if you ask the contractor it's possible that they really don't know! Better safe than sorry!
