Kiwi has fallen in love with aloe vera

I bought an aloe vera 'leaf' (?) when I was making some dehydrator food for Kiwi and had quite a bit left over. I cubed up the gel part and have been feeding them to him and he's just gone nuts for aloe! I know some people use it as a "detox" for sick birds but how safe is it for a healthy bird to eat regularly? :52:

April, I personally have only good things to say about the benefits of aloe Vera. I discovered it years ago when I found out it is a natural remedy for ulcers and other gastric problems. An eight ounce glass per day helped more than any drug prescribed. I rediscovered it for Harry's plucking when her vet told me to put 100% aloe in her water or to feed her the plant in chop. I add chopped aloe to all my bird's chop about three times a month unless Harry has a flare up, then I add juice to her water and plant leaves to her chop every day. If there are adverse effects, I haven't seen them. I don't know how much is too much but I would think you could serve it just like any other vegetable.

Depending on where you live, aloe is dead easy to grow!

The plant is fairly common in most major markets of the World. Check you local Garden Center to see if they carry the plant. Only problem some have with growing the plant is 'over watering' it!

Check your health center or health food centers for pieces or a processed form

My Amazon likes that too. It took me by surprise because she was on me when I was handling a large leaf and she just went for it and started biting it. I was worried she'd eat one of the sharp prickly things, so I cut off a piece for her. Cubing it sounds like a good idea.

Just make sure you have the real plant.



(look at the youtubes of people failing the "aloe vera test", hilarious, one woman even ended up biting into some type of cactus)


Not much luck here sofar- I have a small plant- and I doubt it is 'the real one'.
I've never seen just a (fresh) leaf in the market/ health food shop anywhere.
