I was telling another lady about Sterretjie that helped me bake her bread when I realized that she got the complete wrong impression.

This made me think that I really need to clarify especially for young people.

Parrots should not be on the kitchen counter where you work with your food because of sanitary reasons. They are also extremely fast and can burn themselves in a blink of an eye. They will also grab the knife etc. and cut themselves long before you can prevent it, or even get a mouth full of something that they are not suppose to eat.

If the bird can fly then it is also best that they do not go into the kitchen while you are cooking, I am sure somebody else can give better advice.

This is my kitchen, Sterretjie's counter is on the left. I only place things there that I know she can play with or that I know she can eat:

This section is mine where I do all the cooking, cutting etc. She can not fly so she can not get to my side without my help.

This one shows better how far she is from the stove:

I hope that clarifies it. Please add more safety tips if you have any. ;)

I forgot to mention that I also NEVER leave her alone in the kitchen, even if it is just for a second, she comes with or I dont go.;)

Wow! Look at all that counter space! I'm soooo jealous.

We've had a couple close calls with all 3 birds landing on a hot pan or even on the stove top after we're done cooking, but it's still hot. They aren't allowed in the kitchen if anyone is cooking. This has been hard to teach them since both Jade and Ruby love to sit on the pan rack above the "work area" in my kitchen.

We have to be vigilant with their safety...just like with little kids.

Wildheart can I come live with you! I am soooooo jealous of your kitchen, I would be in all the time if mine was like that! Your bird has her own counter? LUCKY duck!

Oh I wanted to ask first if I could move in :(
I promise I would learn to cook and bake just like a professional :52:

Do you know how it is pronounced? Write how it sounds, I'm just curious, my Hubby is Nigerian he might know.

haha that's the only way I can think of pronouncing it

If you get this correct, I will consider going into the teaching profession

I guess since we can't all live there, she should open the Linky Bed and Breakfast and rotate us in and out :p.....lol

I think your taking the proper precautions, which is great. My birds live in the main area of the house which also has the kitchen. When I am cooking or preparing 'people food' then they are safely in there cages, or down the other end of the house with someone. When I'm preparing their food however (not cooking, just slicing and dicing;)), I quite happily let them out to roam around. I just make sure to wipe down the surfaces they walked on afterwards.

I really should use my kitchen more, but there is just sooo much to do outside.
