Well, it's kind of like a new pet- I have to "feed" it, make sure it's kept in the right environmental conditions and yes, it IS in fact alive! I even "raised" it from a little chunk in a bottle:p Pretty proud of it too, and might even name it LOL.

I started growing this back in December, and it took a little over a month to go from a marble-sized chunk to this nice, thick blob. What is that thing? It is a kombucha SCOBY (symbiotic culture or bacteria and yeasts). The blob is a sheet of beneficial bacteria and yeasts, AKA the "mother". The bacteria and yeasts eat the sugars in sweet tea and ferments it into a carbonated drink full of probiotics (and can also be further fermented into a vinegar). And yes, it does feel as gross as it looks. Glad I choose to do a continuous brew method over batch brewing because it's not something I care to touch very often:09: At $4/ (8oz) bottle, brewing my own will allow me to actually drink it a couple times a week!

Here it is about a week into the process. The "chunk" was at the bottom of a bottle I bought at the store (all bottles have some chunks, but I spent a good 15 minutes comparing all the bottles at the store to find the biggest chunk to start with lol). The filmy stuff on top is the bacteria and yeast beginning to grow:

Here it is coming out of the 1/2 gallon mason jar I used to grow it (kind of like it was being born lol):

NOT fond of the way this thing feels, like something out of my nightmares:22_yikes:

Anndddd... in it's new "home", a 1.5 gallon water dispenser to be used as a continuous brewer (it will rise to the surface over the next few days-week, right now it's at the bottom):

How interesting April. How does it taste? $4 for an 8oz bottle is rather steep! Good idea to grow your own. I'll just be sticking to my probiotic pills instead for now :).

I love how this is in Non-Feathered PETS hahaha! So "it's" name is?? I'm assuming it should have a gender neutral name lol.

It tastes like a tart soda. It is carbonated and you can actually add fruit juice during the second stage of the fermentation process to have different flavors. I used to drink it every day while I was dealing with my medical issues, but the the cost was so prohibitive (even 8/9 years ago this stuff wasn't cheap) I couldn't afford to keep it up long term. I didn't even think to brew it at home until, well, last December:p You should try a bottle sometime;). They sell it in health food stores.

I'm thinking I'll name it Scooby the SCOBY lol:D Once the process of continual brew starts going it will actually be roughly the same amount of work as Mr. Newt is:11: You have to draw off liquid every few days to finish fermenting in sealed bottles whilst adding fresh sweet tea for it to feed on. You also have to clean the system every few months and remove "baby" SCOBY's as it makes them (which can be thrown in smoothies, made into jerky, used as a face mask ext...). It really is like a pet, only you wouldn't eat other pets babies:52:

LOL I love it! The work to keep it alive and thriving, it truly is like a little pet (of the lowest life forms). Scooby the SCOBY, perfect :). Then you need to find uses for all the baby SCOBY's :).

Mayyybe... next time I'm at the health food market I'll be brave and try one!

Let me know if you do:) They have all kinds of yummy flavors.

Not sure what I'll do with the baby SCOBY's yet. I may just compost them even though they have a lot of uses. They feel like I could imagine a certain food group I don't eat and have never actually touched raw;) feeling like and it really freaks me out:eek:

I'm a kombucha fan too! I've thought about buying a "mother" and brewing my own but didn't know you could use the little remnant at the bottom of the store-bought bottles? Do you know which brand you used? I know there are people that will send you a scoby in the mail too but I've never actually ordered one. :) Have you tried any flavor combinations and things yet? I know with batch brewing you can do a second fermentation period and make all sorts of flavors of kombucha.

EDIT: And yes, I forgot to say but I think this is an appropriate place for the thread and think it's adorable you named it!

I never heard of this before I read this post! At first I thought WTH is this?!? So I looked it up (Google is my friend lol) and realized that's besides the fact that it looks quite yucky (sorry lol) it's supposed to be really healthy too, right?

From what I've learnt now your 'scoby' looks beautiful! Special, but beautiful.

Sooo I was fascinated and posted a message on a local fb group to ask who was doing this in my city. Within a minute I had a response! Didn't expect that but kinda exiting. I'll be picking my scoby up wednesday! Thanks for teaching me something new :)

(who'd expect to learn about this on a parrot forum, lol)

GT's plain kombucha is the only one I know of that you can actually still grow your own culture off of. That's the one I used. Oh ya, you might get carded to buy it since it contains a WHOPPING 0.5% alcohol:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: That's why a lot of brands can't be cultured from anymore. Some bleeping bleepity bleep whiners (keeping it forum friendly:)) complained it contained a negligible amount of alcohol as a byproduct of the fermentation process so now they kill the culture when they remove it in most brands. GT's still sells the unprocessed stuff.

This will be the first batch I'm doing. I will probably experiment with flavors later. I have had pretty much all the store bought flavors over the years, hopefully some I will be able to 'replicate' at home:)

Awesome! You'll have to let us know how it works! Lucky you to get started right away too and not have to wait for one to grow:)

A little bit later than planned, but yesterday I finally got to pick up my scoby!

Today I already saw these brown enzyme - strings had appeared, from what I have read that means it's feeling quite happy :)

How is your scoby Scooby doing April?

Picture time!

Looks like yours is thinking of rising soon and the fermentation process will really kick in!:D That was lucky being able to find one already grown.

Mine is doing fantastic! I have been drawing off 6 pints every 6 days (just did the 3rd batch today). It has completely filled out to the size of the jar it's in, grown to about 2cm thick and is already splitting! I foresee some experimentation with the "baby" scoby that's splitting off in my near future:32: Not sure if I will try to make "jerky" or a face mask with it...

Absolutely fascinating and off to do some Googling now! Good luck with your Scooby Scoby Doos.

Lol. I never thought of my yogurt or sour dough as pets.

Lol. I never thought of my yogurt or sour dough as pets.

I do (soy and oat) yogurt too, and wouldn't consider them anything but food lol.

This SCOBY is a little different I guess since it is something you can see growing and when you touch it (not that I want to unless I have to!) it is a solid mass. It's a very strange thing I guess.

Not gonna lie, my initial reaction was, "AAAHHH-HHHHHGGGGH!"

But that's actually kinda cool. Not sure I could get over the mental barrier to drink it now that I know where it came from though.

I think it might be making it stay there that could be the problem IMO. :11:

So just a little update:

When we moved I had to break down my continuous brewer. I put my SCOBY in some of the fluid, but it apparently wasn't enough. The SCOBY didn't die, but it took just over a month to get the fermentation process back on track! Now we're back to churning out daily kombucha and I am thrilled:)

Ok this was really interesting read - thanks for sharing your non-feathered pet with us.

I'll admit I hafta say it not sure how I've feeling about your slimy friend lol but I'll pick a bottle up and give it a go.

I really cracked up "It really is like a pet, only you wouldn't eat other pets babies"
that is tooo funny!

P.S. Glad he survived the move & is back to churning out for ya :)

Let me know what you think! It is an interesting flavor and slightly carbonated (byproduct of fermentation).
