So I had my Yellow-crowned normal (green) Kakariki pair housed in the same small aviary/large cage as my Red-fronted BEC (Black Eyed Clear) pair.

2 days ago when I gave them their morning feed, I noticed 2 eggs on the straw at the bottom of the cage/aviary. The Yellow-crowns were on the ground far more often than the BEC's and the male Yellow-crowned was rather protective of the eggs. Since that aviary was due for a big clean-out, and our new Aviaries are currently being set up (Finally! YAY!) yesterday I moved the 4 Kakarikis into a large cage/small aviary I had spare, as I had just put a nice new clean nestbox in there. I put all 4 because I wasn't sure WHO actually laid the eggs.. as the BEC's are more strongly bonded than the Yellow-crowns.

Anywho, I put the eggs very carefully in the nextbox and moved the Kaks, and yesterday it was the BEC female (my Haru) who entered the nestbox, ran around the eggs, licked each one once. Then claimed the nestbox and eggs as HER property. Today I checked on them again, and Haru's mate, the male BEC (Hayaku) was in the nestbox laying on the eggs... when one of the Yellow-crowns jumped ontop of the nestbox Hayaku got VERY protective and started showing aggressive behaviour towards the Yellow-crowns. He didn't care about Haru getting close, but did NOT like the Yellow-crowns being close at all.

It was just so strange that the MALE was keeping the eggs warm... O.O

So I shall be moving the Yellow-crowns out into their old Aviary (left it to air out today as i cleaned and disinfected it).

I'M JUST SO EXCITED!!! I love my Kaks and I can't believe they are actually finally laying eggs! :D

..I also had to give my Haru a few kisses and cuddles when i moved them... I hand-raised her from 2 weeks old, and now she's 14.. or is it 15 months old, and I've not had much interaction with her for at least 6 months.

SHE LOVED IT! Gave me kisses back and cuddles.. nyuuu!!! Her mate seemed like he was thinking "What the heck is my Haru doing!?!?!?" So I put her in with him and he demanded affection form her right away.. haha. Funny things...

oh I love Kaks!....I use to have one here, we named him Cedric..... but he was very vicious with my cockatiels, so I had to return him :(

I taught him to talk too, he would say 'whatcha doin?' all the time, he had the squeekiest voice.

if you can check the eggs in 7-10 days and see if they are fertile.

I would love to have kaks again....its been years ago since I had one.....good luck! :)

:O awwww....Sorry to hear that. :( It must've been so hard...

The only Kak I've had that's been aggressive towards other bird species is my old Muta. But he wasn't raised around ANY other birds.. and he was incredibly jealous... lol.

Nyaww so cute! My Muta would say "Come 'ere" "Up" and on the rare occassion "FOOD!" lol. So cute :p Funny how it's the Male Kakarikis that are the emotional ones.... hehe

Ahhh yes, that might be a good idea. I can do that :) If the 'H-Team' allows it..

Oh they are WONDERFUL! :p You wouldn't regret a decision to get one again.. ;D Thank you! :)

Awesome! We need a permit to own them here and they rarely come up for sale =(

:O I was just reading about that last night! *pats* Are the permits expensive..? Because Kakarikis are such character-exploding comical little hyperactive nutters that just make your life that much more enjoyable!

Is it true that the Yellow-crowned Kakarikis 'Status in the Wild' is officially 'rare' and bordering on the 'endangered' list? Because that is what I've read, and I prefer Yellow-crowns to the Red-fronteds, so for many reasons I've been wanting to breed more of the Pure Yellow-crowns. Red-fronteds are EVERYWHERE but the Yellow-crowns hardly ever come up for sale here.. but i know a breeder who breeds them ;) Muhehehehe I has little connections!

Do let me know how many they have as I know they have huge clutches.

Yep, I certainly will keep you updated! Mhm, they generally have 6 - 12 eggs in a clutch. I'm about to go check on them now and finish putting their old aviary back together so I can move the YC's out. I'll be back in about half an hour :)

Yea I know, my girl the red fronted does 14 in a clutch. I was desperately looking for a mate for her at that time but it was not easy to track one down. That was a long time ago....

Im not sure on price, i have never really looked into because they never seem to come up for sale over here. I may just have a wee look =D

WOW Mikey! Was your girl prolific! ...I think that's the word I'm looking for..?.. o_O

Haha Freespin, worth a look. ;)

Well I got a few photos of them when I was out there.. took a lot longer with a baby watching me from the sidelines demanding attention every now and then..lol. That's not even counting Haru...
