I got a male Kakariki back in November and he is about 5 months old now. He's been friendly since day one likes to hangout on me or near me everyday but in the past couple of weeks he's started getting a habit of biting hard. either my hands or ears. I'm trying to figure out why he is doing this as there doesn't seem to be a trigger for it. He still wants to be around me, comes when called and has no issue stepping onto my hand. but will just randomly bite down hard and not let go. Anybody have any advice for this new behavior? I've tried ignoring him when he does it or putting him in his cage. I've also tried saying ouch to let him know it hurts (like when training a puppy) doesn't seem to affect anything.

Is there a chance he is going thru puberty and if so how long does that usually last.

You are most likely dealing with hormones as you suggested although I would think he was a little young but I have no experience with that species

In the meantime I'd protect my ears and neck by wearing a Hoodie or, if you have long thick hair, wear it down to cover your ears and neck. I have a friendly female budgie that bites ears and any exposed skin.
