...

Some of you folks have probably read a post or two of mine, about Pookie, (Casper) my buddy DJ's Umbee.

I visit them a lot.. Pookie is kept in a large cage in a separate bedroom.
She has a swing...ONE perch, and ONE toy (she destroys everything in minutes says DJ..well DUHHHH that's what 'too's do!!)
She has a big bowl of water, and a SEED bowl ( won't eat anything else according to DJ) He eats a lot of pasta, easy to fix,and cheap, and Pookie likes the pasta with sauce..and gets the occasional banana.
She does get a lot of "out" time..never when I'm there..he says she goes nuts when strangers are there, screaming like someone is going to kill her..he said it took over two years for his then-girlfriend to even get Pook to step up.
Every time I go to visit,I go in her room and softly talk to her..she gets all big bird on me..hisses..clicks her beak and dances back and forth from foot to foot. I offer her a nutraberry but wont take it.
The poor girl had her left eye removed, hanging, from her "mate" Scooter a few years back. The vet was able to put it back in her head but she is blind in that eye now.
She is fully clothed but is ragged looking..looks like I do when I just got out of bed lol.

She screams..ALOT! DJ just had surgery on his foot, had a bone chip removed, after fighting with workers compensation for over 1.5 years, and because of his job ( an inspector for 28 years at pratt&whitney aircraft) and the walking he has to do with the job,his foot got even more damaged, cutting a tendon almost in half..a 1.5 hour surgery took almost five hours and an eight week recovery is now five or six months:(

I understand him hurting, being in pain etc..but the way he treats that poor bird when she starts up! He screams at her, threatens her with a broom handle..squirts her in the face with a water bottle..puta her in her "pookie crate" and puts her in the bathtub!!! ( he claims she likes it..does her "pookie scratching" to the papers and makes cute.quiet little sounds)
Sometimes she wakes him at 5am with her screaming..other times she lets him sleep.
When she is "good"..she is "good"...she obviously loves him.lets him cuddle with her, gives him kisses..wants to be with/on him.

Sighhhh...why do I care about this bird so much...I have my own kids to worry about

When I tell him "its NEVER the birds fault" he glares at me and calls me all sorts of nasty names and tells me where to go  :p
Even though I have had birds longer than he has...I don't know what I'm talking about.

ok..I'm done...thanks for letting me vent lol

Sorry in my book that is just plain cruelty. This bird's life will never improve because this person is not interested in listening. Difficult choice but a wrong is a wrong. I am sorry and sympathetic for your friend but it isnt Pookie's fault. How old is Pookie Jim? There just isnt a perfect answer to this situation. IMO Pookie life will most likely be a short one based on her dietary intake.

Omg i feel your pain!!! Its like you took on the responsibility of this bird without being asked, and theres only so much you are allowed to do. But in the end you cant seem to stop going over to your friends house and wanting to help this poor bird.and everyday your not over there you just think horrible thoughts of what pookie is thinking or being put through. I take care of my neighbors bird gabby..ive put up posts as well. My neighbor has been gone for over a week ...he didnt tell me he was gone ..i figured it out...30 dollors later for food and a bunch of new toys. Some people should not be allowed to be animal parents...the birds and cats, dogs, hedgehogs, sugargliders, and snakes ..the list can go on and on dont deserve to be treated unfairly becuz they make a mess or bite or scream...underlying issues are always in front of us..like being ignored...like pookie...like my gabby...your a wonderful person..keep doing everything you can...thats all you are left do do....good luck..keep me posted.

I'm so sorry. Toos are so intelligent and sensitive, takes a very special person to handle them. I do hope something good comes about for this one. My heart is so sad...

It seems like a oneway friendship, Jim!

The 'Too' aside, he doesn't seem to put much credence into what you say. Seems like its all his way or the highway! There is just so much that you can do when the relationship is based on so very little.

Consider what reason you have for making an effort.

Pookie is about 28 years old...DJ "rescued" her from worse conditions when she was about 4

Jim

She deserves more Jim. The fact you say she loves your friend also makes it difficult.

What gets me,is,that 10 years ago or so..he raised/bred/showed DUCKS! He got all the proper permits..had a wonderful set-up in his back yard for them..had a variety of species..he DOES love his animals...has always been a bird person..a few years back,he raced to the vet with his moms' Blue Front...who tragically died in his hands from being egg bound :(

Can't figure him out...

Jim

Perhaps he has just lost sight of that Jim, see if you can re-awaken that side of your friend for Pookie's sake?

I would have murdered that guy.
You're a better man than I am for hanging around trying to help Poor Pookie.

Feel your pain, Jim, my friend. I know from previous posts and our visits that do has some problems, with his too. Try to help him reawaken the love of animals and why he rescued his parrot. Plus, if he's had lots of surgical and medical problems, he needs your support now more then ever; it is hard to patient with birds , and kids, when your in major pain. So, we getting together again this summer? You and the fid are always welcome.
