Blue Indian Ringneck
Hello,

Yesterday I purchased a blue Indian ringneck, he is 3 months old.

He is semi-timid. He is very weary, does sometimes fly to the other side of the cage and is a bit scared.

He is always in the top corner of the cage, but I notice he is starting to sit on his perches. At night time, he calms down a bit and I can kind of pick him up.
But then he wriggles around and just wants to go back to his cage.

As a young bird who was only hand raised for a week, (back at the breeders) He seems a bit scared and definitely not tame, but he is eating very well.

Though he is very cuddly, I am a bit worried. I haven't heard him say one sound. Not one noise.

I'm a bit concerned. Others say they don't shut up and are crazy and so chatty.

I really hope he ends up saying something because I hope to one day teach him to talk.

I think it's because he is just settling in, but I hope he says something soon. I would love it so much if he could one day talk, but for now, he is extremely quiet.

I sometimes spy one him, in case if he gets scared just knowing I'm there, but still not one sound.

Please help!

Just give him/her some time settle in and get comfortable with his/her new surroundings and (s)he'll loosen up :)

Be very patient and don't force anything. Also it could simply be a female bird :)

Yeah, Thank you!

Also, do you think females may be subjective to being more timid? or even less quiet and/or chatty?

The breeder I got him from, said that all the blue birds she has bred for the past 9 years have all been 100% males. I found this odd, because they aren't determined by their colours at all, other than the ring which is developed around 3 years.

Anyways, I think he is a male. She said that she felt the pelvic bone and was sure, and he always has his wings lose (like in a heart shape) and i've read that males tend to always do that.

But i may be wrong. Time will tell, haha :52:

If he's a male he will start to get the ring from around 18 months. Don't worry about him being quiet he will just be settling in... Do you have the hatch date? 3 months seems quite young for this time of year but could be wrong. I have and 18 month old ringneck and an Alexandrine. Nimbus the Ringneck began to talk at around 1 year old but you must interact with them or even watch birdie vids on YouTube with him, I know mine loves it..

Mine was quite for about a month! I was so worried! But now he is starting to make lots of cute sounds! What's funny is that be only does it when he thinks no one is around, if he spots us be stops until we leave the room

Oh ok, sounds great! I think you guys are right, he's just settling and will be quiet for a few weeks. After a while, I'm sure he'll be chirping away.

I'm pretty sure I heard him today! I was over the moon, haha.

He's also getting along pretty well. He's starting to get not as scared, and isnt flying to either side of the cage that much, ill just have to persist!

We are also getting him a beautiful cage with a gym on top, and with heaps of toys, he is going to be more excited that me :D

I don't have the exact hatch date, but I'm sure he is 3 months... I'm just about to ask the breeder if she remembers when! :)

I could have been wrong, over in the UK it's breeding from around March, April,May , June when it's warmer. I think you're on the other side of the pond so it would be different 😊

I got my Ringneck at 13 weeks (just over 3 months). He was abundance weaned and ready to go, as my breeder didn't force wean while she was still in the business. So 3 months really isn't all that young for a Ringneck to go home, but generally it should never be any earlier than that.

Shiko started talking at 5-6 months - and by talking I mean using the words we were saying. He made noises prior to that time period. It's a general stereotype, but for the most part males speak a lot with others while females remain quiet in the presence of others and talk often when alone.

Sounds like your little guy is starting to settle in a bit. :) Gotta love that. Do you have any photos of him?
