So I got Remington a Java tree off craigslist~ its really big, the lady I got it from got it from Parrot Paradise, so anyway the wood seems a little slippery, it used to have a "sandpaper/concrete coating" on it but the previous bird chipped most of it off~ so my question is do you think I could use a wood rasp to roughen it up a bit ? I saw kicksnj use it on PVC ~ http://www.parrotforums.com/do-yourself/15622-pvc-bird-play-gym-stand-2.html
I don't want to use vet wrap or sisal because then it would be too hard to clean. Any thoughts?

I don't think it's a bad idea at all to roughen it up a bit. Pete doesn't like any perches he thinks are slippery.

The woman was selling her Hyacinth, cage and java stand, I emailed her asking if she would sell the stand separately, she said no...that was 3 months ago, the person that bought the bird already had one and didnt want it so she emailed last week asking if I still wanted it~

That is a work of art , its beautiful ! It's funny the things that can excite a bird owner , lolol.

Ok so the wood rasp did not work well, after using it for just a few minutes the little bumps on the rasp were worn down...that java wood it some kinda hard, so now I may have to use vet wrap or sisal, which I didn't want to do, but he is having trouble getting from one side to the other because he can't get a good grip

Any updates to the slippery java?
I picked up a used one and have the same problem

Strange , I had no problem with the rasp wearning down !
Try the vet wrap , it does work really well , but of course my guys love to chew it off , lolol.
I also used leather strips and they work well for my Macaws.
They are just starting to get used to gripping in certain places and to let themselves slide to get other places. Baby has mastered it much quicker then Stella for some reason , lol.

Thanks, I may rasp it a little if they continue to have problems. Its only been one day

I'm missing something her, you paid 350 for a wood perch and your going to attack It with a rasp or stick tape all over It! I have a small java tree that's smooth, my senegal as no problem with It and It's a lot easer to wipe cleanthan a roughed up one will be.

Well , if the bird can't grip on the branches and use the tree , what's the point of having it ? Some birds have a problem getting their footing on the smooth branches. Lucky for you your bird doesn't have this problem.
But for the people who spent that kind of money and more like I have , I bought two of the largest available. If my birds can't safely use the trees , I'm going to do whatever I have to do to make it safe for them.
The money isn't a issue at this point.

Certainly give your bird a chance to learn how to grip.
But if they can't , at least there are solutions :)

I have a Java tree but not that big. Cameo loves to play on it all day and I don`t see a problem with it being slippery. It has a smooth serface but Cameo does fine on it. I like the different sized perching she has now. Keeps her feet well excercized.

I did not pay that much. The original poster did.
I'm going to wait to see what happens. I don't want to rasp it because I want it smooth. The thing is larger then the original posters is. I'll see about posting a picture.

Thanks
