My niece is visiting and Jasper had an instant reaction to her? Is it fear or he just hates her? I ended up covering half his cage so he couldn't see her. So he hung out in the corner and furiously clicked his beak. What do you think? Do cockatoos usually have this reaction to someone new?

Hard to know what Jasper is thinking, though that is the Goffins all-purpose screech of displeasure. Not sure it represents fear in this case or he'd be flopping around the cage with a "flight" response.

More likely he either doesn't like her or is spooked by her appearance. Anything stand out from her clothing, accessories, or demeanor that might be unusual to him?

Is this a repeated response or a first-time encounter?

Repeated response. Every time she visits. He doesn't act a that way with anyone else that visits. His normally open cage door is closed while she is here because I don't know how he would behave with it open.

Wow, then it must definitely be her! Is she afraid of birds in general, perhaps that is something he senses?

She’s not afraid of birds. She really didn’t react in any way to him. She walks in the room and he gets worked up. He settles down when he doesn’t see her for a while. She’s very similar in size to me, glasses like me, doesn’t come from a smoking household so I have no idea. I find it strange because my husband has some friends that stop over, big intimidating guys and he doesn’t react but small female he goes nuts.

The Rickeybird hates any kids under about four feet tall, and has since he met his first one when he was maybe 1-2 years old. Maybe the child just didn't fit his schema of people size? Not sure.
Of course he's not a cockatoo, but he beak-clicks loudly when being manly/roosterly... when courting me or threatening his rival...
Is Jasper's clicking like this?

The clicking sounds about right but Jasper just hangs on the side of the cage and doesn’t move as he clicks.

He did a little better later on in the day. He was still very frequent with his calls but he came out on the cage top and preened so I know he wasn’t scared.

While Jasper is making more noises he is still an unnaturally quiet cockatoo so when he does get loud it’s an event.

I wish there was a parrot psych 101 course or book out there.
Sometimes their erratic behavior is puzzling to say the least.

Even though to YOU, she looks similar to you, to HIM, she may look like someone he's had to fear in the past. My 'too is afraid of my brother and thinks he has to defend me from him and it can't be my reaction to my brother -- I LOVE my brother! -- so it's because he reminds Rocky of someone. Rocky has been abused in the past, by men, and while he's reconciled to my husband, something about my brother makes him tense.
