We are looking for a bird for our family. It's very much like we are pregnant and waiting for the day the new addition comes to the family!
I think I am in shock. I'm nervous.
But without further wait, Ricco came home to us tonight!

It's going to be a hard road ahead. His diet is just about as bad as it gets.
I was told he hates dark hair (mine is chestnut brown)
And right now, he's in his cage, clung to the bars, with the door closed. He has never had the door closed, unless in trouble.

They called my fiancé around 4 o'clock. Said they are ready, and to come get him. We haven't heard a peep from them before, since they ignored our calls, about 3 weeks ago.

Anyways. It's nearly midnight. I have got to try to sleep. I've got a long day tomorrow. A long weekend, really!

We've got a bird!!! I can't believe it!!

Awww, the poor dear looks a bit shell shocked. I'm sure you guys will provide a wonderful home for him and he will settle in, in no time.

Congrats on your beautiful new baby!!

Reading this brought a smile to my face. Glad the previous owners came to their senses. Welcome home Rico!

YAY! Welcome home Ricco! :D

I wish you the best of luck with him. Give him a few days to get used to his new home. I'm sure he'll appreciate the GOOD food he'll be getting for once. :)

BEAUTIFUL bird! I would have loved to have seen YOUR face when you heard about that phone call, LOL.

WOW! what a great surprise!!
super news, I can't wait to hear more stories.

He slept cling to the cage bars. I've read that is normal.
I got him down from the top of my (one day amazon) cage with a stick. He almost climbed down to me. I would have crapped myself. I want to build our trust. I'm not one to force myself on someone until I trust them. Unless they are behaving badly, or safety is an issue.
I couldn't sleep. And when I did I dreamed about him.
He's just climbed down off the bars, onto his perch, as I was standing in front of him. I have my music playing, and he's listening.
He likes my cat, and watches her intently.
He seems to favour standing on foot. I'm going to have to watch that, and mention it when I go to the vet.
He looks over weight, which would make sense, since he eats horrid foods.
It's a seed mix as his staple, with salted pistachios. I have zupreem fruit blend, I'll go pick up a small bag of the natural zupreem, as well. I will also order a small bag of Harrison's and maybe roudybush. I want him off the seed mix, as a staple.

it sounds like your making some headway!!
he looks better than he did last night.....that's great that he's perching rather than clinging to the side of the cage.

why the wood in his cage? did that come with him?

Why are reasons a bird favours a foot? Could it be from a flat perch, his main perch is a 1x6, that he has carved down in the last 10 years to fit his needs. He never ruined it, just made it his own. One side has holes, for treats, and the other is where he loves to sleeps they said.

Yes. It came with him.
My fiancé is reluctant to change the cage. The previous owners said the swing and the perch "are his favourites. I want to make it my own.
I suggested to my hunny that we could take them out and incorporate them into the play stand we build :)

Wow! How exciting! I'm so pumped for him and you two. I think you will have so much fun getting to know one another (overall, that is...expect some speed bumps!) and he will feel SO MUCH BETTER on a better diet. Congrats.

Rico is gorgeous! I am so glad he is finally home with you:)
when we got our rehomes, I left their favorite things in the cage with them so they would have something familiar with them. When they settled in and felt safe, I would replace some of them, but left their very favorite in with them:)

I was wondering about the 1X6 in there, too. I don't know, I think a flat perch is nice, but I'm not sure I'd want my guys (and gal) constantly perching with their feet flat on a surface.

Perhaps replacing it with an irregular LARGE branch (like dragonwood WITH the bark) would be better for him and his feet (and the muscles in his feet, too). :)

Yay! Congrats! He is very handsome! :) I hope he settles down soon! :)

Congratulations! Exciting finally getting a bird. I know you're been waiting a while.

congrats! go get some red apples and slice them up... Macaws love red apples.

Standing on one foot is completely normal for a macaw, but I would switch to natural wood perches as soon as possible, as this could cause arthritis over the long term.

Go with the unsalted pistacios... this is my macs favorite food as well. Too much salt is very bad for them.

Let us know if we can help.
