Hello im new to the forum but have been spying for some time, but now that i actually have a female eclectus im curious to see what others think about her behavior. Im a 1st time parrot companion, but wife had a cockatiel for years. So basically i dont know what to expect other than what i have read.

first off she is going on 12 weeks in a few days

She has been home for 4 days

So far:

super quiet, spoke on 1 occassion, the 1st was day when she herd her breeder on the speaker phone and her flock in background, she gave 3 calls.

Toys:
Not interested in chewing anything, except eucalyptus leaves and nuts, but very moderately. Not wires, phone cords rope etc.

No interest in foot toys, attacked and played with it for 5 seconds and havent touched it since.

Tried to setup a foraging station but she could care less about it. She will walk to treats spread out but wont hussle too hard if not made easy. She expects you to hand feed her and looks at you like your crazy if you make her do it herself.

Tried a homemade foraging toy with her treats but she didnt go for it for too long, even after showing her where the treats went.

Out of her cage, she runs to the sliding door and stares, preens and naps.

She does fly and land well considering she had her 1st and last clip a few days ago.

She stepped up to me and wife on day 1 and continues to do so as long as a treat is offered. Same for returning to her cage and sitting on her table perch.

She is completely unphased by the loud Vita Mix blender on high every morning.

Unafraid of my harassing 2 year old. who want to feed her forever.

Took permanant residence in the Tidy Seed Bird Feeder on day 1. She eats, sleeps and stares in their.

My Question is
So far She seems to be perfect... Is this the calm before the storm?
Is she just Lazy? i worry that she is bored and really dread the feather pluckin thing. Although her body language appear happy and relaxed.. but who knows?

Any advice is welcomed

I think at the moment she is just shy. I got my boy about a month ago and he is still a little shy but coming around. He's only just starting to become a bit more playful. 12 weeks is really young, they're just tiny babies.

It's hard to say when they're so young what they will turn out like. Enjoy the quiet now and hope it continues :) My boy is still generally pretty quiet but the microwave does set him off.

Like it was mentioned above, she's just getting used to the new place plus she's still young and shy at the moment. Give her time to settle in, she might be a laid back bird but you just never know. Both of mine are older when I got them and both are very laid back birds. Neither one would touch a toy ever! I dunno why I have all kinds of toys in their house cause they never mess with them.

She's just getting used to everything. Since she's only been there couple a days she's still trying to get settled and she's trying to figure out your schedule and habits and reactions to things. When I first got lulu she didn't really do anything for the first two days. She sat in her food bowl and just watched us. As a matter of fact, she JUST became interested in toys and I've had her for about 2 months now. Give your girl a week and you'll start to see her personality. But the good thing about eclectus is that they are so mellow and quiet

thanx all, she is starting to get a bit more active, she now begs to come out around the time i normally let her out, she climbs the front of the cage and scratches.

Also she is taking to the clicker training very well, yestarday she followed the target for a treat on multiple occasions and tried to fly to me but fell short..LOL

She seems to more interested in foraging So ill refrain from buying toys and try making a few till she warms up to them.

Thanx all

She's just young and not all there yet... give it time.

These are things they learn to do with time. Plus she's just getting to know her new surroundings still... so she might not be 100% relaxed and confident enough (or interested in that, with all this other new stuff) to play just yet...

And eckies, though I never owned one, I did rehab about five or six, always seemed to be the kind of bird that was just content to hang out on the back of a chair and talk to you/be talked to...

Plus food oriented... (Esp. Sweet Potato!)

My advice is to just give it time.

It took a while for me to teach Ruby to play with toys, but once she figured it out she can destroy them like nobody's business. She does prefer the planet pleasures shreddable toys. The first toy I successfully got her to play with was this one:

Hah! My birds love that one too! That seems to be a universal.

I make those! Only I use those round wooden clothespins in the wiffle ball holes instead of straws. (Straws would be destroyed in seconds instead of minutes!) You can get them at the dollar stores. Six wiffle balls, 24 clothes pins, and a spool of sisal rope $3.00. (Destroy all you want, we will just make more...)

she's beautiful, will have to give it try... I have no problem making toys for Phoenix jus need to know where to buy good safe supplies. Also how long does Ruby play with say 1 toy?

thanx

I always introduced my baby birds to new toys by putting them on my lap and playing with the toy with them. Once they get it, just back off... it's a bonding thing, and a learning moment.

I was the one in charge of socializing and rehabbing the aggressive/ psychologically damaged birds down at the rescue. I did lots of this over the years...

It helps with the bird's confidence issues, plus it's a bonding, playtime thing... (Plus, let's face it, it's just plain fun! I never needed to do this with my Greenwing, but who can resist playing with a lap bird with a new toy!)

Lap birds are generally created. They are not born that way. (Well, maybe large macaws, and some squawkitoos, but... not most.)

I bought many toys for Oliver that he likes okay but sheesh the stuff I make he goes crazy for like the top to Pam has a hole in it and I tie it to his perch on his play stand and--he played with it daily for months--doesn't seem to destroy it!

now is the time to start training. the type of training that is done in the first six month determines what your bird will turn out like.
