Is this bad?

Well, I volunteer at a local parrot shelter and at the same time am thinking about getting a green cheek conure. Unfortunately, the shelter doesn't have any green cheek conures and I don't know if it would be bad to get one from a breeder. If there was a GCC at the shelter I would definitely adopt it but that is not the case right now. How should I approach this?

Hi,

I personally would get the bird that I wanted and if it meant getting from a breeder than so be it. I know there are many birds in shelters but you are already giving something back so to speak by volunteering your time to help them. My advice would be to get the bird that you want and not the bird that you think people would expect you to get.

I agree, if there isn't one there, then go ahead and get one from a breeder. I got my caique from a breeder because there are no shelters in my area. Sometimes you just can't rescue the bird you want. However, if there are sometimes green-cheeks at your shelter, maybe you should just wait for one. If you have to special order your conure, then it might take just as long for one to show up at your shelter. You should definitely get the bird you want and have researched rather than the bird that's available. Good luck!

Look in other rescues, Kijiji, Craig's List and ask around in bird clubs. There are lots and lots of GCCs that need new homes, no need to buy from a breeder.
