Parrots
2 Indian Ringnecks, Tiki (DH's) and Pippin (mine), 1 lovebird, Gemma (DD's) and 1 in birdy Heaven... RIP, Wilbur.
My baby :greenyellow: is now 4 months old and is doing really well... just a sweetie and very affectionate with me, ok with my son and tolerant of everyone else...LOL. He is active, has a good appetite and seems, overall, healthy.

However, I do have one concern...I have noticed that his lower beak looks odd, like the layer near the end of his beak is peeled off. the only thing I can think of is that he chews at his wooden playgym and maybe is rubbing the bottom beak on the wood too much?

Can you post a pic? it sounds like normal wear and peeling but it would be nice to take a look.

Not to worry Chippy, it's normal.....parrot beaks are made up of layers, much like our skin, their beaks grow from inside-out & that's just the old layer coming loose & off.....every once in a while you might notice him rubbing his beak back & forth on his perch or on the cage bars...that's him doing his own beak manicure.....

Thanks...that's kind of what I thought, but Wilbur my GCC (RIP) never had anything like this and Pippin is my first IRN..so I wanted to check in here, with all the "experts" :)

I don't know if I can get a photo, he's a little camera shy too close up, and might not let me :p

If Wilbur never had a flaky beak, he was just a fastidious beakacurist.....all parrot beaks grow the same way.....

Wilbur did get the flaky upper beak but what I am seeing isn't flakiness.

Pippins lower beak isn't flaky...it has no colour at end nearest his face, kind of greyish and not shiny like the rest of the beak... It is so hard to describe!
The part of his lower beak that looks odd is hidden by his upper beak. The only way to get a photo would be to hold the beak and he was NOT about to let me do that! LOL...he was having no part of a photo shoot! :)

Like I said, in every other respect he is active, alert, has a great appetite, loves attention and appears perfectly healthy...

We live in a small town and
