My amazon charges for the garlic whenever she sees me peeling it. She's torn a clove out of my hand before and devoured it on site, squealing with delight the whole time. Then of course she stank for a good while. So now I have to hide from her when I'm peeling garlic!

Thanks for the list Spiritbird. I was aware of 9/10 of them.... I never knew about the beans, although I did know improperly cooked kidney beans were toxic to humans. Funny how we don't always put 2 & 2 together!

I have a book, "Good Parrotkeeping", by Robin Deutsch. In it she claims that garlic IS a good food item, as it "has antibiotic and antitumor properties; stimulates the immune system and kills parasites; help eliminate lead, zinc, and other toxins in the body". I do not know what her source is for this info. Contrast this with the latest BirdTalk magazine, Oct 2011 issue, and the article "Toxic Foods", by Margaret Wissman, a DVM and DABVP-avian practice. In it she states that, since both onion and garlic contain aromatic sulfuric compounds that have the "potential" to cause anemia in birds, it is best to not offer any of these items to our birds. I believe it best to err on the side of caution and forgo any onion or garlic, as my birds have quite a varied palate without those anyways.

i've always wondered about the garlic/onion thing, as i have read garlic safe, onion not, but both garlic an onion are similar types of plants

nuts had both without ill effects, but i never feed them to her directly, cooked or raw, and any foods i cook with a high concentration of either one, she no longer gets!!!

I've heard the same thing, garlic safe, onion not. But if unsure, contact your avian vet and ask.

But one good thing, it will ward off vampires
