I have a conure who loves bathing and drying out while preening.

Will it dry out their skin and feathers if they bath every day (even twice a day)? Will it strip them of their feather oils? I just use cool tap water, nothing else.

Bathing is awesome for a birds skin and as long as your only using water it won't hurt the feather oils. It's when people try to actually wash their birds with shampoo(don't!) that their oils are affected negatively.

It's wondeful that your conure likes to bath :D

my Alexandrine is always joining me in my shower (i have one of those portable perches) and that is usually two times a day. even if he doesnt get drenched he still gets covered in mist and his plume is very healthy and shiny. i think as long as it is just water they are fine :)

Thanks for the replies!!!

I'd love to take him to the shower with me 2x a day, because it makes him such a happy bird.

So totally safe for skin and plumage as long as its just water right? It won't encourage over-preening or dried out skin?

It's actually what helps cure those conditions. It's the soaps that strip, water just hydrates if its not hot.

There have been a couple of times when I have had to wash a bird with dish detergent and the messiest was when a bird got stuck to flypaper, the other time was when one got stuck to a sticky mouse trap.....I wish I'd taken pics, but I've never been much of a photographer of mine or others birds, but you can rest assured that unless you want to end up with a naked bird, peanut butter, canola oil & Dawn diswashing detergent will be your fast friends.....oh, and forget about any appointments for 2-4 hours, just make sure everything is rinsed again & again if you ever need to employ similar measures.....
