Hey everyone!

As some of you may know, I've been waiting since March to welcome a new fid into my flock. Yesterday I was able to pick him up from the airport, and oh my goodness. Nothing ever prepares you to fall in love all over again!

I was worried that when I picked up him, he would be upset, shrieking, and absolutely terrified... but not a peep! I talked to him on the drive home, and he was happily chewing away on the toys and munching on his food in the crate. When we got home, I opened his cage gingerly and let him come out to explore, and he has NO fear! Sounds don't bother him, things moving don't phase him, and he LOVES people! Strangers mean new friends to Shiko! I let him adjust to his cage, and I knew immediately I needed to get him so more difficult to chew toys, because he destroyed 3 of his toys within 20 minutes of being in his cage, haha!

He has also transitioned perfectly onto his pellets, loves fruits and veggies, and is just an absolute dream. I couldn't recommend my breeder enough to anyone, she socialized her babies so well! I'm SO impressed and in love!

Here's some pictures of my gorgeous baby boy, courtesy of my boyfriend! I have to wait at work before I get to go home and play with him some more... It's absolutely killing me, haha

I apologize for the blurry quality of some of the images, my boyfriend isn't the best at taking pictures, but here he is in all of his adorable blue glory!

Shiko is gorgeous! He is just breathtaking. That is wonderful how quickly he is settling in with you, and wow, he already destroyed 3 toys? He must be feeling so comfortable there.
Congrats on finally having your new baby home with you, and please keep posting pics;)

He is BEAUTIFUL. I love his colours. I'm jealous. I just got a baby Blue Crowned Conure and he is fearless too. I have had birds in the past from bad breeders and they were always scared, but birds I have had from good breeders were always fearless and confident. You must of got him from a great breeder for him to be so well socialized. I would still like to own a Ringneck eventually if I can find one, I think they are beautiful birds, I just can't find any good breeders though. Congrats. :)

Congratulations Chantal! Shiko is such a cutie, and such a pretty blue! Sounds like you got one with a great personality. :)

Yeah, stock up on the bigger bird chew toys, I've heard IRN's can be very heavy chewers.

Such a beautiful blue! Glad he's well socialized right off the plane, must be nice to start off on a positive note with your new baby:D Looking forward to seeing Shiko around!

Thanks everyone! He's such a sweet heart, I'm so in love. And Joe, I did try to upload a video of him eating some banana that my boyfriend had sent me, but my Photobucket app on my iPad won't properly upload it to my account for linking it here :(

Wow...what a beautiful bird! Congrats!! Love the blue!

TAnd Joe, I did try to upload a video of him eating some banana that my boyfriend had sent me, but my Photobucket app on my iPad won't properly upload it to my account for linking it here :(

Do you think you could send it attached to an email?

If so I can put it on YouTube for you :)

I'll PM you

Joe

Joe, you are the PF's I.T. person haha:D. You really know your stuff!

Chantal, don't forget to add his name to the banner above by your avatar!

He's gorgeous!!! Love his colors!!!

He sounds like a wonderfully well-socialized baby!!! Congrats on your new addition! [emoji4]

What a breathtakingly beautiful bird! Wow! And your breeder must truly be amazing for him to already have that level of social interaction.

Looking forward to that video, Chantal!

Oh my, he is beautiful! Congrats on the new baby! What breeder did you get him from? It sounds like she did an excellent job of socializing him. :)

Thanks Julie! He's a sweet heart. I'm a bit flustered with him right now, because he loves to be with us but doesn't like to be touched like the breeder eluded to. I'm rather confused considering that she would brag about being able to touch him from head to tail and him loving it, and yet he comes here and gets angry if you even bring a finger close  Especially since he and I had a really good cuddle session the first day he came here.

I'm not sure if it's bluffing or not, and I'm a bit lost on what to do :( I know IRN's aren't overly fond of being touched, but I'm not sure what to believe about him at this point. When you touch him, angry isn't really the right word for it... he doesn't bite hard, doesn't absolutely freak out, but he waddles away and pins his eyes and lightly beaks you. Not sure if it's bluffing behaviour or not, and not sure how to reinforce positive hand training with him as the techniques I used with Avery don't apply to him. He loves being out though, and really enjoys playing with his foot toys and being near us, which is a bonus! Just not the cuddly and touchable parrot I was led to believe he was... or at least not yet. Fingers crossed!

Love the videos, Chantal! He's beautiful! And as for his aversion to being touched, it might just be a matter of time. Bixby started out very accepting of petting and cuddles as a baby. But eventually, he became more hands off, enjoying being on our hands and being close by, but preferring not to be petted. And, like Shiko, he would often lightly grab the offending hand or finger with his beak and move it away. Lol!

Lately, though, he's become a lot more accepting of being pet... on his terms. He enjoys being hugged to my chest whenever he is first taken out of either cage. And there are times now when he'll welcome being scritched on the head, back, or even under the wings... as long as we respect when he's done and wants to do something else.

But it took a while to get him to this point. A while, consistently reaching out and attempting to pet him, but always respecting his answer when it was "no". Remember that we brought him home after weaning back in November. He took his sweet time, but he eventually let us know when he was ready. Maybe Shiko will, too.
