Hi. I'm new to the forum and have enjoyed reading through the threads. I'd like to intro you all to my fids, Scooter & Scarlett and tell you a little about me. They are my first pet birds. My avatar photo is of them, but the color is slightly off. They are not aqua in color but true blue and he is very pale and dilute with some violet feathers on the backside. In every photo I've taken the color does not represent correctly. They are beautiful.
My husband had an Indian Ringneck parakeet for many years before I met him. I never understood one's desire to own and cage a creature that God intended to be flying free. I adore birds of the wild and have spent untold amounts of money on feed for them in order to observe and enjoy them. We attract about 19 different species to our feeders throughout the year.
He tried explaining to me, "The birds you see in cages are captive bred and already caged. They know no other way of life and enjoy human interaction so why not give them a home?"
Last January I dreamed that a had a pair of lovebirds. I didn't think I even knew what lovebirds look like but I guess their image got lodged in the old brain at some point. It seems they were what I now know are peachface or normal color Fischers.
I didn't recall the dream until May, the day before Mothers Day. My husband and I were in North Houston visiting friends for the weekend and we went to an exotic pet shop that we'd been to many times before. They carry birds, reptiles, bunnies, sugar gliders, capybaras, hedgehogs... you name it. It is like going to a zoo.
I rounded the corner by the hedgehogs and saw two sweet birds cuddling and preening each other. I fell in love with them on sight. My husband went back the next day and bought them for me. So that is how I came to care for Scooter & Scarlett.
Their names are memorial after my 2 cats, litter mates, which were white with blue eyes. They lived 9 and 13 happy years with me and brought me much love and enjoyment. The blue shade of these birds remind me of those beautiful blue eyes of my kitties.
The info provided by the pet store was that the birds are about three years old and a proven pair, having had 3 successful clutches. How much of that is true and accurate I do not know. They had recently acquired the entire stock from a lovebird breeder that, for some reason, was getting out of the trade. It was a HUGE amount of birds, the remainder being normal color Fischers, black masked and peachfaced.
I feel certain they are male and female, although I've not had them sexed. This I've determined by their behavior. More to come on that in another thread.
Wow, this was long but hopefully slightly interesting.
I look forward to hearing from other Lovies lovers and breeders as well.
