Cockatoo - rescue - 40 yrs old
Hi,

I am a non-tech person so I hope I can manage this type of thing. I lost my daughter's Yellow Naper Amazon (her 16th birthday gift) to a horrible accident related to an illness never identified. She had been a member of our family for 12 yrs. Anu had a fairly good vocabulary and a lot of whistles - show tunes, TV shows, classics etc.

Someone pleaded with me to take a Cockatoo. Peaches' human passed away without making arrangements for any of her birds. Peaches' was a captured bird brought to the US some 40 yrs ago. There was little history on her but she went thru two foster homes before coming to me, I think noise was the issue. She seems to be in good health - no emotional issues - doesn't talk or whistle - sort of sad.

I'm retired and I try to balance my day so Peaches has time out of a large cage while my dogs are put outside and the cat goes in the laundry room. She is not unfriendly but not super friendly. My Amazon use to travel on my shoulder while I did my house cleaning etc. Peaches will get up on my arm but will not stay for long. She likes to fly to the top of a cage with a homing pigeon - another rescue who has been with me for about 5 yrs.

I am hoping for recommendations on manufacturers of cages. I bought our Amazon from a breeder who has retired. She recommended a large cage but I don't remember the brand. Peaches has a large cage but I would like a travel size (using a small metal dog crate now) and a cage for the screened in porch when nice weather comes. Does anyone have a manufacturer they would recommend? Thks

Welcome to the forum, i too live in Maryland! Good for you for taking in Peaches~ I know someone who also has a cockatoo named Peaches :) I like the king cages, that is what my bird came with, it is 15 years old and holding up very well. For my macaw I used a plastic dog crate, the largest one I could get, with a handle. You can easily put a perch in it for traveling. How long have you had Peaches? Are her wings clipped? Maybe you could just use a stand when she is in the screened porch, as long as she can't fly off of it or climb down from it. You could also look on craigslist and get something used for outside use.
