Introducing Luna.
gzDzdnY.jpg

I don’t want to make a long post, I usualy try to avoid that but it will be difficult this time.

Took a 3-hour drive down to San Diego and met up with Beatrice C and Mr C. Got introduced to there beautiful flock and the rescue bird Luna (formerly known as Jelly bean).
We (my son and I) stayed about 1 ½ hours letting Luna get use to us and see how she reacted to our presence. Luna was relaxed with us from the git go, standing on one foot, taking food from our hands.
Near the end of our stay when I was trying to make the go for it/better not decision Luna walked over and started to groom/nibble at my son’s had and fingers. That made up my mind so our trip back had one more intelligent creature than when we went down.

Thanks to Beatrice C generosity we came back loaded with birdie bread (something we have not tried before) and the chop that Luna is use to.
We had some trouble getting her out of the transport cage and into her new cage. In the end we had to towel her but she did come very close to stepping up using the handle of a wooden spoon.

Bingo was (and is) very interested in his new neighbour. Bingo also liked the birdie bread and I think he may find the type of pellets Luna eats to be more acceptable that what I have been giving him.

The biggest issue and potential problem is Bella. She was doing her poofy bird imitation could not be handled at all. Bella looks to be her normal self this morning. Worse comes to worse I can move the cages around so she is not as close as she is now.

I have only hit the high points and I will be sure to make regular updates as she integrates into our lives.

Welcome to your new beautiful girl, hope Luna will be very happy in her new home.

Luna is the perfect name for her! I'm so glad to hear she's settling in nicely.

What a beauty! I hope and believe Luna will settle in nicely and make accommodations with Bella.

So nice to see this success story!

Welcome home Luna! You’ve hit the jackpot, girlfriend!

We expect regular updates :)

absolutely beautiful!

Congratulations on your new addition! Luna is a beautiful girl. Very curious yet sweet eyes. My parents green cheek amazon was such a sweet natured and laid back bird. Hope you get to enjoy that kind of sweetness from your new girl:) I also hope Bingo enjoys his new friend!

I have done some reading on the species and found that this bird goes by 3 different names.

Green-cheeked Amazon, Red-crowned Amazon, Amazona viridigenalis

Amazona Virdigenalis is the Species Name that defines both Green-Cheeked and Mexican Red-Crowned Amazons. The family has large variations is coloration of the crown, head, cheeks and nape. In addition, they also have a wider variation is size with nominates being on the smaller size and others can be found larger. For these reasons the species was first seen as two different Amazons. Early DNA testing found them to be the same species. Old memory working here, and that said, I believe that the Mexican Red-Crowned Amazon group was the larger size and that it was likely because 'as a group' they had populated more open areas.

They are commonly sweet, but take care to always include them as they (as most all Amazons) can revert to a more wild state. They love to be in the center of things and that is the best place for them.

They remind me of LCA to a point that I can commonly confuse the two. LCA's have more purple and less red. But both are real charmers and will steal into your heart faster than you can believe.

Take care to keep them off-the-floor, if they show signs of becoming Hormonal. They can become foot chasers and bitters if not closely monitored. That said, once they understand 'no' they rarely have problems.

Enjoy!

It is a bit confusing.

Based on body language Luna wanted to get out of her cage. I tried to get her to step up but she is not ready for that.
I left the door open and then bribed her with a peanut.
She flew around and spent some time on my Java tree. got some nice pictures but I don't have time to upload before I go to work.
She did step up on a Manzanit (cant spell that) perch but jumped off just before entering her cage. Luna hung on to the side of the cage and I had to use a towel to direct her inside.
I don't want to rush and force her but I don't want her to become cage bound ether.

She has a most unusual voice. it's kind of gravelly but still easy to understand. She laughs whistles and says hello.

That gravely voice reminds me of some of the aliens in the alien bar scene in the original Star Wars. She also make some other sounds that are dead ringers for R2D2 and some of the other droids. I'm fairly convinced that whoever her first humans were, they were huge Star Wars fans.

Also, I didn't realize quite how much she talked until she was gone. My house seems so quiet now! I am quite certain she's chattering endlessly with the rest of your flock while you're gone.

My Bingo talks but only when you are trying to talk also.
very distracting.
Bella goes into chatty mode and will talk for 1/2 hour or so.
What Bella gets upset about is when Luna fly's around. When Luna is in her cage Bella is relaxed. After Luna's little outing this morning Bella was upset and refused to be picked up.
In future I will plan to take Bella out of her cage first and let her chill in my son's room. Then I should be able to let Luna out and stretch her wings.

Glad to see another succesful rehome on the forum! Thanks to both of you for making it a success. Hope you will keep us updated with more photos!

Just saw this thread  Luna is gorgeous Wes! I have no doubt she will come around after she realizes she isn't going anywhere anymore. It sounds to me your son just has a natural attraction with birdies..seems they KNOW he won't do them harm and that's awesome.

As far as Bella having her beak "out of joint" so to speak..Smokey was like that with Amy. Unfortunately she never got over it :(

Looking forward to more updates...and more pictures of course!
